Organic Baby Products-Toys - Chemical-Lead-BPA Free and Natural From Under the Nile and Green to Grow
As a mother of two, Elizabeth Borelli of Nubius Organics is passionate about protecting the health of babies through the use of natural, organic baby products. Carrying the somewhat unique title of Sustainability Evangelist, Elizabeth answers some of the most common questions posed to her by concerned parents.

Exposure to what kinds of chemicals and materials causes the greatest concern to parents in regard to their babies’ health?

Elizabeth: The most common concerns that parents bring up are pesticides in foods and lead and/or PVC in toys. Recently there has been great concern about BPA (Bisphenol-A) and phthalate in babies’ bottles and pacifiers. Also, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are often associated with products that have fragrances or synthetic chemicals, so parents seem quite concerned with avoiding those.

In your opinion, what are the biggest health risks to babies when they are exposed to these chemicals and materials?

Elizabeth: The Environmental Protection Agency has mentioned a number of potential health hazards that could be caused by exposing children and babies to pesticides. Among them are asthma, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, retarded brain development, and even cancer.

Poison prevention experts have said that excessive exposure to lead and PVC can cause babies to have learning and behavioral problems, seizures, brain damage, anemia, and even kidney damage. VOCs are suspected of overwhelming a baby’s sensitive respiratory system.

BPA, which has been a very hot topic in the news recently, has reportedly caused neural, developmental, and reproductive damage to laboratory animals. This scare has caused an outcry for manufacturer recalls of baby products containing BPA.

What can parents do to protect their babies from these potential hazards?

Elizabeth: In general, non-toxic and natural products help to prevent babies’ risks that are associated with chemical sensitivities and exposure. In order to avoid pesticides in food, it’s always best to buy organic. Natural fiber and organic cotton are excellent choices for clothing and bedding material.

In order to limit chemical exposure from toys and accessories, you should avoid certain plastics and buy all natural toys and accessories that are lead-free and PVC-free. Also, you should buy BPA-free baby bottles and BPA-free and phthalate-free pacifiers. And when your little one is outdoors, choose a PABA-free UVA and UVB sunscreen.

What products and manufacturers do you feel best address these issues?

Elizabeth:
  • Under the Nile makes excellent organic cotton and natural fiber bedding for babies.
  • Speesees and Sckoon are quality manufacturers of organic cotton and all natural toys and accessories for babies.
  • Plan Toys, Under the Nile and Sckoon are all good choices for lead-free and PVC-free toys.
