Opportunistic Thieves Coming to a Property Near You Soon

About the government campaign to raise awareness concerning the rise of opportunistic thieves in the current climate
Opportunistic Thieves Coming to a Property Near You Soon
Another but less reported knock on effect of the recession, is that crimes like burglary increase. Historically this has proven to be the case in previous recessions; and I don't know of any new earth shattering countermeasures to prevent it happening again during this recession.

At least this government are aware of this issue and are attempting to tackle the problem in a proactive rather than reactive mode. The Labour Party Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has just launched a new media advertising campaign to warn how easy it is for opportunistic criminals to target you, your home and your possessions. The £1.6 million pound campaign carries simple advice about how to protect your property from burglars.

Given the amount of security products online, it's inconceivable that a recent British Crime Survey indicates 36% of burglaries occur in homes with unlocked doors and windows. Security experts agree that most burglars are opportunistic thieves who view properties without window and door locks as an easy target.

The government campaign is about raising awareness that opportunistic thieves could be coming to a property near you soon. The government intends doing everything they can to provide help, advice and support to vulnerable people during times when opportunistic thieves are looking to illegally supplement their income.

The government want the minority to realise they won't get away with it. It's a great tag line which is sadly backed up with no significant deterrent. Introducing tougher jail sentences, although not very politically correct would have significantly more impact on reducing opportunistic crime.

The solution is simple, if known burglars are jailed, then they can't break into people's property and cause untold misery to law abiding citizens.
