One Rug’s Story

If your rug could talk, what would it say? This is a short article written from a rug's perspective. Read it with an open mind and you might look at your area rug a little differently next time.
I sit motionless day-in, day-out, just lying around pretty much. I let people walk all over me. But really, I don’t have much choice in the matter. Its not that I’m lazy, that’s my job, it’s what I do. I provide a little comfort and warmth for tired feet, while at the same time protecting a home’s most valuable asset. If you chose me carefully, I will do all this while adding some decorating flair by tying colors together and delineating open floor plans. I am versatile, useful and practical. I am an area rug.

We area rugs are sort of an unsung hero when it comes to home decor. Oftentimes an afterthought, we are usually chosen after all other decorating is complete. Some might say that means we’re like the finishing touch, the so-called cherry on top. I say it speaks volumes about how important, or unimportant, many home owners think we are. Now I’m not saying we should be one of the first things you think of when decorating or redecorating, but c’mon, we’re more important than all those knick-knacks and dust-collectors you fill your shelves with. Where’s the love, people?

An important thing to remember is that not all area rugs are created equal. We’re not all made of the same material, we all come in different sizes, and basically, we’re all suited for different uses. Me, I’m a 100% wool rug. I’m tough. You can throw me in your most high-traffic areas and pretty much forget about me. I enjoy a regular vacuuming as much as the next rug, but taking me outside for a brisk shake-out session can sometimes do the trick. I do need to be professionally cleaned a couple times a year, or after a spill and other accidents. This, of course, is not cheap. But neither was I, and if you take care of me, I’ll take care of you by providing years of use.

Like I said, I’m a wool area rug, seven feet by nine feet. I’m a good size rug. But don’t forget about my smaller pals and my slim buddies, the rug runners. We all serve different purposes and we’re all important in our own way.
