On the Edge - Part One

This is my first published story. It is the first part, I will post the rest of it soon. I would like to know what you think about it, so please comment!
Hot summer day, middle of July, Marry was lying unconscious on her bed. The door of her apartment cracked open, at the door was Noemi, her younger sister. There seemed to be a chaos, things laid all over Mary's apartment. It looked like someone was in a process of moving out. Everything was scattered all over the apartment: shoes, laundry bag full of dirty clothes from past weeks in the middle of her living room, books, bags and things, there was a stench coming from the kitchen, Noemi, proceeded to the kitchen, and to her horror there was a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, rotten food in and out of the fridge. She held her breath for a second and walked out.

Noemi tried to visit her sister as much as she could. She knew her sister had some deep dark fazes of depression that were heartbreaking, and there was nothing she could have done about it. Her sister simply cut all contacts every time she would go through another phase. She proceeded to check on her sister. She walked down a long but narrow corridor, pushing herself through things, even stepping onto some of Mary's shoes. Mary's apartment was specious, with two bedrooms, a separate kitchen, bathroom and a terrace, which her sister never used. The only thing that Noemi did not like was the narrow corridor, which led to bedrooms and bathroom. It has been three weeks since Noemi did not hear from her sister at all and was concerned about her well-being. Noemi was a tall, full figured woman, with full lips and long dark hair. She was able to lighten the entire room with her personality, and was often a pillar to her sister Marry in her difficult times, at least she tried.

She walked into Mary's room, and there she saw her sister, laying on her back, covered in blood. She screamed "Oh my gosh Mary", she took off her shoes quickly and ran to her sisters body. She put her two fingers on the right side of her neck to check for her pulse, she felt it barely beating. She was in the state of panic, her heart was biting so fast, she didn't know exactly what to do. Shaking she dialed 911, while tears were streaming down her face.

A dispatcher responder to her call, " Good evening mam how may assist you?"

"Please I need an ambulance, please hurry, my sister is dying!", she cried on the phone.
When the dispatcher asked her about the situation, Noemi replied " I do not know mam, all I know is, I came to her room, and I found her lying in her bed covered in blood barely breathing".

"Calm down mam", said the dispatcher, "I need the address, what is the address?".

Noemi could not remember the address for a second, then she said " 1802 Orchard Avenue, Grand Junction, 81501

"Please mam hurry my sister is dying" she added.

The dispatcher said "No worries mam I will send an ambulance car right away", then the phone line broke off and Noemi grabbed her sisters lifeless body, somehow she managed to put it on her lap and she was trying to console her. All she could do was whisper tender words, while she was hugging her sister so hard, rocking her back and forth. She was trying not to cry loud, but couldn't help herself, the pain was too deep for her to hide it.

She was holding her sister's head with one arm, wiping the blood of her face saying: " Baby I am here, your sister is here. I know it hurts, your sister is here now and she loves you, you need to stay with me ok. I need you to be strong, I know you are strong, we'll make it through".

Her sister was hearing this, but was unable to move or respond in any way. She was just lying in the arms of her sister lifeless.

About six minutes went by and the ambulance car was in front of Marry's house. Noemi did not want to leave her sister, but she had to open the door to the paramedics. She placed her sister gently on the bed and ran like a lunatic down the corridor and straight to the front door of the apartment. She opened the door widely, while she was breathing deeply. A bunch of men walked up the stairs and into the second floor. Paramedics were accompanied by two detectives. They approached Noemi and asked: We had an emergency call, are you Noemi? It was rather an unnecessary question, Noemi's white shirt was covered in blood.

"Yes" she replied, crying, "My sister is in the room down that corridor", she added with a hopeless voice.

"Ok mam, we will do our best ok. You need to be strong ok". They tried to reassure Noemi, while two of them walked toward the room. They walked heavily down the corridor, and the remaining two stayed with Noemi, one was preparing the oxygen tank, while a woman hugged Noemi and tried to console her. Noemi wanted to go and help them, but the woman would not let her, suggesting it is not a good idea.

The detectives were looking around her apartment, trying to identify what happened, pressing on Noemi to tell them what happened, but Noemi was not giving them any information they were looking for. She seemed too crushed, for someone to commit such a horrifying thing to Mary.

After taking some pictures, the two paramedics gently carried Mary's body out and placed it on the stretcher, while one of them tied her and covered her with a piece of white bed sheet up to her neck and placed an oxygen mask over her face. Noemi walked out with them to the ambulance car and went right with them to the hospital. She was numb of everything, just crying and praying her sister would make it alive. They finally got to the hospital and rushed her in through the double doors and right into the surgery room. Marry seemed to have lost lots of blood, and was a serious case.

Noemi was not able to be with the sister during the surgery, but she was comforted by the nurses and taken to a waiting room.

Noemi was crying so hard, she was posing between her breaths. She was confused , ten thousand things were going through her mind. What happened? Who could have done this to her? She was angry and wanted to confront the killer face to face.

"Who?" were the words coming out of Noemi's mouth as she was rocking back and forth.

She knew her sister and would not believe that she would do such a horrible thing to herself.

"I mean not Marry", she said," She would never do something like that to herself".

Nine hours went by and Noemi was still waiting for the news about her sister. Finally a doctor wearing blue scrubs on came in the waiting room and approached Noemi.

"Are you Marry's sister", he asked

"Yes I am", Noemi anxiously answered.

"I am Dr. Stanley" he said, looking straight into Noemi's eyes.

"Doctor how is my sister doing?, she approached the doctor, "Is she Ok?"

"Well Neomi, I must say your sister has suffered traumatic injuries to her head and deep cuts to her face" he said, while he was folding a piece of paper in his hands.

"I am afraid it is serious", he added lowering his gaze.

"I want you to know that we have done everything we could to save her", he said looking straight into her eyes, as if he needed to reassure her that her sister was in good hands.

"Right now she is in comma" he paused for a second, "and she has a small chance to survive."

"I am sorry Noemi", he added, then he started to walk out of the room.

Noemi rushed a grabbed him by the arm and said "Doctor, somebody did this to her right?"

"From the position of the fractures, it appears to me that it was self-inflicted, maybe she was trying to commit suicide" he said and lowered his eyes. The doctor was a middle age man and too calm for such traumatic situations, but he has seen so many during his career, it seemed as if he got used to seeing it.

Then he looked at Noemi again and said "Did your sister ever have suicidal thought that you could recall, because it appears to me that she might have tried to commit suicide and was unable to do it all the way".

"I am not trying to be harsh here, I understand what you are going through Noemi, it just makes sense that she was sad and tried to end her life" he added.

Noemi looked at him in disbelief and said "No doctor, that is not possible".

"My sister would never do something like that to herself", she added

Then she sat on the sofa and in tears, she faced the doctor and said " Growing up my sister had some dark fazes of depression, where she would not come out of the house for days, sometimes a week or two, but that was as far as it got, she never did anything stupid, let alone try to kill herself"

"I understand your disbelief Noemi, but I believe that it could be that her depression had reached the breaking point, where she could not have taken it anymore, and she tried to take her own life " he said.

Then he bragged her hand folding in between his two palms, as though he felt her pain and said: "I can reassure you that your sister will be under intensive care".
