Oh No ! My internet is working so slow-- Simple tweaks for making your internet run faster

Last week I had to call Mr Arvind, Network Administrator at Miracle Studios, for rectifying some problems with my windows. And i was really impressed by the way my windows are running, but suddenly when in logged in to computer this morning i was greeted with my snail-pace internet explorer. The speed of my internet was so slow , that i can embrace a quite slumber of five minutes over the opening of Yahoo.com’s website.

So , once again i called up the same techy who had earlier set my window’s right i.e Mr Arvind.

I said "Mr Arvind, sorry i am disturbing you again withing the gap of just one week."

Mr Arvind replied me politely , " No worries Mr Naveen , it’s my job and i don’t want see any hardware or software problems in this office and if they do prop up i am here to knel them down."

Further he asked me, " So what’s wrong with your PC , Mr Naveen ."

" Internet Explorer is working very slow. In fact so slow that I can easily have a cup of tea while waiting over the time for a website to open." i replied to him with a tense ( due to a clouding work deadline) face.

After listening to my woe’s he added with words of assurance " Don’t worry Naveen, your PC will running like an hare within one hour, i make these tweaks in to your PC so your internet will run faster.

Tweak One )Setting bandwidth limits for your PC :

Step 1) Start/Run and type in " gpdit.msc without quotes. Scribbling this command will open a window called the Group Policy Editor.

Step 2) Now reach this folder :

Local Computer Policy/Administrative Templates/Network/QoS Packet Scheduler

After selecting QOS scheduler , you will see a limit-reservable-bandwidth at the right of the window.

Step 3) The select limit reservable bandwidth and right click on it and choose properties and a pop window will appear, check on enabled and change the bandwidth limits to % to %, apply and press OK.

Step 4) Finally restart

Tweak Two : Checking DNS server settings:

At this moment i asked Arvind " Why we do DNS server settings Arvind?

"Hmm, let me explain you Naveen. When type in some address in our browser and press go , the request goes to our local Internet Server Protocol servers which translate that character based name in to a numeric string of data ( like: 66.102.7.104).

This address resolution mechanism can sometimes be the main reason for slow internet acess, especially when the DNS servers of your Internet provider are not working properly and choking at times.

To overcome this problem, you need to follow the suit of changing your DNS server name to a more reliable but and free seervice called OpenDNS. There is no software to install, you just need a small tweak in the internet connections settings:

Just replace the default DNS server address of your ISP with the new OPenDNS servers which are :

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

The DNS server can be easily changed at your TCP/IP properties in the control panel:

Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Network Connection -> TCP IP Properties

Why OpenDNS is better then normal IP settings ?

In OpenDNS the domain resolution request is performed from the nearest physical location and the address are the concatenated at the end. Therefore you notice a nimble internet access.

Other benefits of having Open DNS :

1) Suppose you enter a misspelled domain name ( like www.gggoogle.com) in the address bar of your IE, the OpenDNS will automatically direct to the www.google.com without any intervention.

2) You can also partake the pleasure of having safer browsing experience since OpenDNS will prevent from accessing a scam website dy default.

Some other precautions you need to take before using OpenDNS:

1) Dns server goes down: In extreme situations you OpenDns server can go down, saving the DNS server address of your IP become handy in such situations

2) You can de-select the auto correct option by going in to your OpenDNS page .

After executing above procedures for my PC, Mr Arvind handed over my PC for a test run.

He said " Naveen please sail through your PC and tell me how is it working ."

"I opened my favourite website " www.askmen.com " on my refurnished PC. And the website opened so fast that i cann’t get hold of when it happened. It was out of the blue."

I leaped on to Mr Arvind , " You are great Arvind, thank’s a lot ."
