Getting an Off-Set Patio Umbrella:
An off-set patio umbrella, also known as a cantilever umbrella, is a nice way of livening up a yard, a garden, a terrace, a deck area, a poolside area, a spa area, an outdoor seating area in a restaurant or any other area requiring a cover. It can create an interesting and pleasant ambiance and provide you with some necessary shade as well.

Off-set patio umbrellas come in a wide variety of makes, designs, fabrics and patterns, so you can either have a bewildering time shopping for the right umbrella or have no trouble at all getting the exact kind of umbrella to match your decor plans.

Things you should consider when buying an Off-Set Patio Umbrella:
Before you go out to buy that off-set umbrella, you should have a general idea of where you intend to place it and the exact area you wanted shaded. This is important as it will help you know the size of umbrella you need to get. You don't want an umbrella that is too large for the intended area or too small to give you any actual shade. Generally, the umbrella should be somewhat larger, about five feet larger according to the experts, than the area to be shaded.

Then you should consider if you want to buy a wood-frame, a metal-frame or a fiber-glass-frame umbrella. Each kind has its own unique qualities and advantages. Choose what you want according to your personal liking and your desire for convenience and easy maintenance.

Many people often choose a wood-frame off-set patio umbrella for its charming simplicity and because it co-ordinates well with an existing decor. You can get it in different kinds of wood, from the very high-quality ones to the ordinary ones. With proper care and regular maintenance, the wood frame can last a long time. These umbrellas usually are opened and closed with manual manipulation. This can be with a manual lift or a manual pulley system. Wood frame umbrellas cannot be rotated.

Metal-framed off-set umbrellas generally are more convenient and long-lasting; the aluminum ones come with an enamel coating that both looks good and is resistant to weather damage and peeling. You can open and shut these umbrellas with a crank system, a collar-tilt system or a push-button system, neither of which requires much exertion on part of your muscles. And you can rotate an off-set metal-framed umbrella through 360 degrees.

Fiber-glass framed umbrellas are lighter in weight than wooden or metal framed umbrellas, which means they are easier to haul around and so you can change your mind a hundred times about where you want to place them. They are generally long-lasting and durable, but probably may come in fewer varieties of finishes than the other two.

Consider the fabric and design next. Umbrella fabrics, as mentioned earlier, come in a great variety of colors and patterns, but, aside from aesthetic looks, you also need a fabric that is durable and is weather resistant, UV resistant, mold and mildew resistant, color fast and breathable. Some popular fabrics for umbrellas are Sunbrella, Suncrylic and Olefin. These fabrics usually don't fade, crack or split. They can also withstand moderate winds without tearing.

Be sure to check the warranty the off-set patio umbrella comes with. Many firms offer one year or longer warranties for the umbrella frame and fabric, but generally not for the umbrella ribs.

Keeping your Off-Set Patio Umbrella clean and well-maintained:
Your off-set patio umbrella will normally come with cleaning instructions. Read these instructions carefully and follow them. If there are no instructions, just follow a daily cleaning regimen. If you clean your umbrella regularly, it will last you a long time. Dust the frame and the canopy daily, or wipe using a with a damp cloth if there is any accumulated dirt. If dusting and wiping with the damp cloth doesn't get the dirt off, wash the umbrella with soapy water and then wipe dry. Never use chemical cleaners to clean your umbrella as these can damage it. and there is too much dirt to get off with just a damp cloth, this doesn't work, wash with soapy water and then wipe.

When not using the umbrella for a long period or if the weather is bad, store away your umbrella indoors. You should close it shut in its locked position, tie it firmly, and put it in a protective umbrella cover to protect it from dust and mildew. Store the umbrella upright in its umbrella stand otherwise you chance damaging the umbrella ribs. If you can't store the umbrella inside and it must be left outside, cover with an umbrella cover, which kind of sounds funny, but when you've made an investment you disregard the jokes and protect it.
