Office Furniture
An office is a place of work. This is the place where one will work for at least 8 hours in a day. It is also the place where clients may visit you from time to time. So, buying office furniture is actually akin to making an investment in your work or business.

Before embarking on an office furniture purchasing expedition, it makes sense to consider certain things at the outset. They are:
  • What is the size of your office? Is it a small room or a series of rooms?
  • What is the layout of the office space you have?
  • How many people will be working in that office space?
  • What kind of work will be done in the office? Is all of your work done on the computer or do some people have to work on paper work as well?
  • Who will be the people who would be interacting with visitors or clients? Who need not be interacting with visitors or clients?
  • What are your stationery and filing needs?
  • Where do you plan on storing these office supplies?
  • What are the different office appliances (such as fax machines, copiers, telephones etc) that you would be using? Who would be using these appliances?
Based on these facts, you can measure your office space and jot down a list of office furniture that you may need.

The basic furniture pieces need in a standard office would be desks, chairs, filing cabinets and bookshelves. Let us look at the things one should consider while purchasing these furniture items.

Let’s tackle the work desk first. Depending upon the need, one can decide the kind of desk one has to have. If the person sitting on the desk would be spending a lot of time on the computer then the desk needs to have a sliding platform under the desk for keeping the keyboard. The desk and the keyboard should be of such a height that it should be comfortable for the user to sit and type on the keyboard while looking at the computer screen. If the user would be spending time doing paper work, then it is best to have a desk which is suited for such an activity.

If someone is going to spend time doing work on the computer, then doing some amount of paper work and also entertaining visitors and guests then one can consider an L-shaped office desk where all these activities can be facilitated. For additional storage facilities, one may also consider desks which have in-built drawers.

The next thing to look at is the chairs. No matter what kind of work one is doing, one is going to spend at least 8 hours sitting in the chair, if not more. Therefore it is extremely essential to have a chair which will not only be comfortable, but it will also provide effective support to the spine and the rear. A chair should also allow for some amount of what is known as ‘wiggle space’ – which means, the chair should allow for you to move around in it once in a while. Also the chair should have features which should help you adjust the height of the chair so that you can sit properly and work on the desk.

Filing cabinets and bookshelves are very essential for storage purposes in an office. These help you store your office supplies, stationery, files and papers in an orderly manner. Sometimes, some papers and files can be extremely important. If you are going to deal with this kind of information, then one can consider looking at storage cabinets which have locks.

These are the basic furniture pieces which one can consider buying for ones office. These are available at several furniture stores. You can also opt for some do-it-yourself pieces of furniture, if you are that way inclined. Most of these office furniture pieces can be bought at different prices depending upon your budget.

Apart from these office furniture items, there are other items which you can buy, such as flooring or carpets for your office floor, flower vases for the desks, photo frames with nice pictures to hang on the walls of your office. Decorating your office is always an ongoing process and will take some time. You may also consider hiring a professional decorator to do up your office, depending upon your budget.
