Ode of the Lonely

I received an e-mail from a woman who'd read some of my poems. She asked me to write a poem about missing people, "one that will stand for missing adults as well as children." I hope you find your brother, Paula.
I woke up today with tears in my eyes
I saw it was your birthday and began to cry
I couldn't hold back as I wondered why,
Why did you leave me without a goodbye?

It's been so long since I last saw your face
My heart is so lost, just out of place
Against the wall does my body brace
Before I go to the phone and by it I pace

I miss you, I need you, To see you, again
Please, dear God, don't let this be the end
It's not too late, this we can amend
Just please, dear Lord, don't let this be the end

I open the fridge and take out a cake
For this occasion it I did bake
I cut a slice and eat all alone
All the while pleading for the ring of my phone

The day drags on with agony
I just need to know where are thee
Find your way home, wherever you are
I beg that it's somewhere that's not too far

Finally, alone, I watch the sunset
Like when we were little, I'll never forget
A small smile spawns from the orange and the blue
A smile I got because I thought of you

Your laugh, your smile, your happy mug
Come on back so I can give you a hug
We'll sit, we'll talk, we'll cry together
For I still love you, now and forever
