North Carolina Travel From A to Z
A list of activities and attractions across North Carolina, that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
A. Appalachian National Scenic Trail -- this famed trail is a favorite of hiking enthusiast. Beginning in Georgia, the 2,160 mile trail runs through many of the Atlantic coast states until it reaches Maine. North Carolina has 300 miles of this historic trail.
B. Battleship USS North Carolina -- In Wilmington, one can tour the 9 decks of this WWII ship. The tour includes exhibits, crew member's stories, a visit to the restored bridge and a change to see the crew’s quarters.
C. Cherokee Indian Reservation- Learn about the history and culture of the Cherokee Indians, nearby is the Cherokee Heritage Museum and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian which has interactive displays and exhibits.
D. Discovery place (Charlotte) -- This hands-on museum has something for everyone. From its science circus to its planetarium, a rainforest to animatronics dinosaurs or learning about historic events at the OMNIMAX Theater this is a place for the entire family.
E. Elizabethan Gardens -- In Manteo, take some time to see this exquisite garden, complete with 16th century statues, native plants and an herb garden.
F. Forts-North Carolina is home of several historic fortifications. They are Fort Defiance in Sawmill, Fort Branch (Hamilton), Fort Dobbs (Statesville), Fort Fisher (Kure Beach), Fort Macon (Atlantic Beach) and Fort Raleigh (Manteo).
G. Great Smokey Mountains National Park -- Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one can find some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. Whether it is springtime with it s dogwoods and azaleas or fall with its red, yellow and orange hues filling the trees with beauty, this is always a favorite place to visit. There are a variety of locations for overnight stays, outdoor activities and many family friendly activities.
H. Highland’s area waterfalls -- Spend a day taking in the peaceful power of the cascading Highlands waterfalls. From the 120 foot Bridal Veil Falls to 75 foot Dry Falls to the triple falls at the Glen Falls, these are well worth the hike to see them.
I. Imagination Station Science Museum (Wilson) -- This is a sure family pleaser; there are interactive displays, an up close science experience and daily demonstrations sure to make science more exciting for everyone!
J. Junaluska Museum Memorial and Medicine Plant Trail -- Learn more about the Cherokee Nation through Regional artifacts and displays about the Cherokee Nation through regional artifacts, and displays about the medical practices of the Cherokee.
K. Korner's Folly (Kernersville) -- An unusual home with 22 rooms covering 3 floors, but 7 levels. It is known for its unique floor plan and ceilings ranging from 6 to 25 feet high.
L. Lazy 5 Ranch (Mooresville) Ride a wagon or drive along the paths here for an up close look at animals. There are over 600 animals from around the world.
M. Moorhead Planetarium and Science Center (Chapel Hill) - Spend a night under the stars. There are exhibits on astronomy, astronaut training, a sundial and much more.
N. North Carolina Aquariums -- North Carolina is home to 3 aquariums. They are located in Pine Knoll Shores, Ft. Fisher and on Roanoke Island.
O. Oak Island -- From pristine beaches to unique shops, great seafood restaurants to the Oak Island Lighthouse or the walkway and Nature Center there is plenty to do here.
P. Pisgah Covered Bridge in Asheboro is one of two in North Carolina. It is a pretty place for picnic lunch.
Q. Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual -- Bring home a basket made in the tradition of the Cherokee Indian. There are also mask, pottery items, and wood carvings.
R. Rosetta C. Baldwin African American Museum -- Celebrate the contributions of many African Americans at this High Point museum.
S. Seagrove is the home to nearly 100 potteries. Come see the remarkable works of art at the Museum and Pottery Center here.
T. Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock is a family fun filled park complete with train rides, a petting zoo, old west fun and live entertainment.
U. Unto These Hills (Cherokee) an outdoor drama that depicts the life of the Cherokee from the 1540's to present day.
V. Village of Gold Hill Visit what was the richest mining area east of the Mississippi during the 1800's. There are several buildings on site to be visited.
W. Wright Brothers National - Come see where Orville and Wilber Wright first made their historic flight. There are several reproductions, a museum, and knowledgeable tour guides to make learning fun and interesting.
X. X marks the spot- North Carolina’s coastal waters have been dubbed the Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the many ships that have gone down near its shores. There are many opportunities for treasure hunting along its sandy coast.
Y. Yanceyville Historic District -- Visit the 23 buildings and homes of downtown Yanceyville. Most of the buildings were erected between 1830 and 1861.
Z. Zebulon B. Vance Birthplace State Historic site - visit the reconstructed home of North Carolina's Civil War Governor Z.B.V (Weaverville)
