Nokia E90 - Martin's Quick Review

The Nokia E90 purports to be your own mobile office, but can it live up to this claim? We put it through its paces.
Nokia E90 - Martin's Quick Review
Just two years before the birth of the new millennium, Nokia introduced their first 9000 series Communicator phone, designed for the business mobile user in mind. In 2005, Nokia traded the chunky, mini-laptop design of the Communicator for the sleeker, more compact candybar and clamshell handsets found in the E series business line of smart phones. The Nokia E90 has revived the classic folding design of the Communicator, but with the speed and functionality of the E series phones, for a business mobile that is unsurpassed.

At first look, the Nokia E90 looks like an oversized retro mobile from the past. The size is the only thing about this phone that is retro. The brilliant 16 million colour external display, convenient navigation buttons, and easy to use numeric keypad allow all the phone’s cutting edge features to be accessed without opening the handset, something lacking in previous Communicator models.

Opening the E90 transforms the device into a tiny mobile office, with the functions of an actual laptop. The wide, full colour high resolution screen is perfect for surfing the web wherever you go, checking and replying to your emails, or even relaxing with a video. The keyboard is as simple to use as your laptop keyboard and makes texting easier than ever. The hinged design allows the screen to be conveniently adjusted to just the right angle.

The Nokia E90 is packed with features so it is just as functional as it looks. Designed for productivity, this business mobile is ideal for sending and receiving emails. With Quick Office, you can not only view your attachments, you can also edit them, no matter where you are. The E90 supports Bluetooth, Infrared, USB, 3G, and features a Symbian operating system for maximum versatility.

The integrated GPS is loaded with Nokia maps and works great for directions on foot. For more detailed maps and turn-by-turn directions, a subscription service is required. The E90 features an XHTML web browser and, with the large internal screen, surfing the internet is much more enjoyable on this handset than on smaller phones, although some websites still seem to load considerably slower than standard computers.

Nokia knows that all work and no play is not healthy for anyone, so the E90 includes the latest fun mobile phone features as well. The 3.2 megapixel camera has auto focus and an LED flash, taking high quality photos and video both day and night with minor loss of clarity in low light. The E90 also supports video calling through the secondary VGA camera.

The E90 also features a basic music player that supports MP3 and AAC files with an integrated FM radio. You can enjoy your music though wireless headphones or you can use the internal headphone jack, although it is a 2.5 mm jack rather than standard size. This revitalized Communicator handset also supports a variety of entertaining Java games.

If you’re looking for a compact phone that can easily slide into your pocket or a thin and stylish mobile with a high class media player, the E90 will probably not be your first choice. If a functional and productive communication device capable of performing like your computer, but small enough to fit in your briefcase, is what you need, the Nokia E90 Communicator is just that.
