Things start to get interesting...
Night of Terror: Pt 4
Okay, I just wanted to say that, to those who have enough heart in them to glance at my story, less even read it....well, I just wanted to say sorry for the wait - I had some difficulties with some things, and it was pretty hard to figure where I was going with this. So now that I’ve got that all cleared up, hope you like...thnx and enjoy

Mae studied the interior, trying to avoid Nick’s gaze, or maybe Kale’s. She felt confused and unsure and the moment with Kale sure didn’t help her dazzled mind. Like the way he’d felt on her, warm, and she imagined he was thinking about it too, or about her. Her heartbeat quickened just thinking about it, and her face grew flushed with each breath. Tonight was going to be one wild night.

"So me and Stacy will take the newer one, like I said, and you and Kale can take the other one." Nick was saying to Mae.

"You mean take the crummy old one?" Kale interjected.

"Yeah that’s what I mean," he answered, casting a hard glance at Kale. "And besides, this one is faster." Nick pointed to the newer, refurnished elevator, grinning mischievously and sounding like a sneaky little boy.

"Exactly." Kale sounded exasperated and Mae laughed. She thought he looked so cute standing there arguing a lost fight, and then glaring at her for slipping up and giggling.

She shrugged and cracked a weak half smile to him, and then turning to Nick she said, "Well, you’ve been standing there making fun of just about everyone, complaining about when we can start this thing and dragging on and on and-" the look Kale gave her shut her up. But inwardly, she was laughing. She couldn’t help but show everyone.

The room fell silent and everyone who was still awake stared at her. Mae pointedly looked at each of their shocked faces, grinning. She usually wasn’t one to speak up unless it mattered or she was annoyed – like now – into running off her big mouth. Kale was really the only person she actually talked to, without disdain or criticism, so his face was unsurprised and bored, and a little annoyed. Looking at Nick’s and Stacy’s stuck up faces made her smile. They were staring at her like a mute just spoke words in Greek. Priceless. Nick’s face was stained red, and Stacy was glaring, obviously summing a critical summery of her.

Mae was maintaining that snobby outlook everyone had already claimed her of. So really, she had to act like a conceited selfish bitch to keep up her appearance. Well, that’s what she told herself anyway. Convincing herself the other kids didn’t really need to know who she really was. Except for Kale, since she didn’t want to lose her only friend. "Well? Any day now." Sounding purposely bored and irritated, she was hoping they would find her even more stuck up and dessert her so they could get out of this hunk-a-junk of a bank.

She broke the silence and deliberately walked over to the run down, slower pulley and pushed her black painted finger down on the button to take them up.

"Well, c’mon then." She didn’t even turn around. Maybe they’d already left, And besides, the walk home wasn’t that long. But then, she’d have to sneak back into her room, which was downstairs and try hopelessly to make it without notice down the rickety stairs that were bound to end up collapsing one of these days. Those things were nearly a thousand years old and sounded like train in your ear every step. There was absolutely no way she would make it down. Parents that were way to uptight would die if they knew where she was. It’s not like she went to bars or other run down "fun" places this old town had.

With no such luck, they hadn’t left; she was way too ahead of herself. She heard the quiet footsteps of all three come up behind her and beside her. Out of the corner of her eyes she saw Nick pressing down on the more advanced button that would take them up, or down to the basement. No one she knew went down there.

From the hilarious stories by Rebecca, whoever went down there – besides the janitor and people who worked there – never came back out. It was amusing to know how many people (kids) were scared to even look at the building, less even set foot in it. The fact that only kids never came out, considering no kid ever went in, was ridiculous; and made no sense whatsoever.

The sound of the elevator’s arrival stopped her entertained thoughts. Nick and Stacy were walking in while she was waiting for the rusty metal cage to open. She noticed the walls closing for the other pulley that Nick and Stacy were in. Thrusting out a hand, she prevented it from closing.

"You know, if you plan on cheating, you should at least not let the whole world see, considering we’re standing right here." She stared deep in Nick’s eyes, which usually made people stutter and lose thought process. Not because she was outrageously beautiful, but because it unnerved them, especially when she didn’t stop. Apparently, he was coherent.

"Well, were would the fun in that be?" He grasped her fingers and pried them off, allowing the door to close, smirking the entire time. During the whole confrontation, Stacy has been welded into his build and staring down at her in defiance. And by staring down, she was literal. The heels that girls had were practically stilts. You’d think they would break. But underneath Stacy’s weight, which couldn’t be more than 100 pounds, they had no hope of breaking. So much for luck. Compared to her Nike skates, they had the definition of femininity, while Mae’s had the distinct show of something other than femininity. Another glance at those kind of heels and she’ll be falling faster than she can look away. Seriously.

She dragged her hand back stubbornly and turned. Their stupid elevator was so slow! By "their" she meant her and Kale. Just one look at him had her blushing like an idiot. His face and eyes and lips...why hadn’t she noticed before how good he looked? Well of course she noticed, just never thought she could have something with him. Okay, okay, she would never have something with him; he’d never like her…like that. It was impossible. Impossible like reaching the center of the Earth impossible; impossible like flying to Mars. Something hopelessly idiotic and undeniably absurd, it was that impossible. Man, she had major issues. Major as in the sun exploding major or falling off a cliff major or...Okay, enough of all those stupid analogies already. And remembrance of their earlier…confrontation…left her breathless all over again.

Annoyance had her mumbling brainlessly and making herself even more of a fool in front of Kale. And she could hear the stupid thing trying to figure out whether to come down or go up, and that had her cursing to no end. The other elevator had to be at the top by now, and the silence was extremely frustrating, except for the sniggers and hushed laughter coming from Kale every now and then when she tended to let go of, again, her big mouth.

"You know, if you calm down, maybe that piece of junk will go faster." Sarcasm was thick in his voice and she could hear the smile in it.

"Real funny Kale, hilarious, everyone is laughing." She frowned, teasing was a major part of their messed up friendship, and it just added to her aggravation.

"I know, I know. It’s worthy of an award. Don’t you think so?" He put on a pathetic show of accepting an imaginary award, crying, and waving like and moron to a fake audience. Actually, it was pretty funny, and she was laughing before she realized it. She hadn’t even noticed the elevator had arrived.

"I think," she paused, "that you definitely have a mental illness. Not award worthy."

"Oh, well, glad you think so." He just smiled and waited for the cage to move out-of-the-way, and ushered her with his arm to go first. Once they were inside, she pushed on all the buttons that led them up.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…

It was really quite a shame they didn’t have more floors. She turned and faced a confused Kale, who she shook her head at him. When you went up and faced toward where you enter, the wall wasn’t completely whole. Not like holes from rats or things like that, but a kind of design that let you see through to in-between floors. A kind of scary view if you imagined dead people smashed in-between.

When she finished pressing all the buttons for each floor, it would leave them more time. More time meant more figuring out what was going with her thoughts, or maybe feelings.

The ride was so slow from stopping at each floor and opening, which added another two or maybe ten minutes, so she made herself comfortable against the inside wall by sitting down. Kale was staring at her and she patted the space next to her for him to sit beside her.

He took the two steps and sat down, not against her, but close. He wanted to make sure the friend thing was alright, first.
