Newt Gingrich Wants Freddie Mac Records Released for Florida

Newt Gingrich claims he has nothing to hide, and wants his consulting contract with Freddie Mac made public prior to the Florida primary vote.
Heading into the Florida primary, where he hopes to continue the success he found in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich wants his consulting contract with mortgage company Freddie Mac to be released prior to the January 31 vote. "I think it would be very helpful and our attorneys are talking with the company. You know I left the company so, it's their decision and Nancy Desmond, the president of the company, has to make the decision. But I'd be very comfortable releasing them," he said.

Fellow primary candidate Mitt Romney has ratcheted up attacks on Gingrich in the past several days, openly questioning what, exactly, he did for Freddie Mac. With the mortgage meltdown being a major part of the economic turmoil in the U.S., and with Freddie Mac having a less than stellar – some would say fraud-filled – role in that mess, it is a fair question. Apparently, however, Gingrich is more than happy to have his role with the company come to light.

Noted Romney, speaking of Gingrich, "Over the last, what, 15 years, since he left the House, he talks about great bold movements and ideas. Well, what's he been doing for 15 years? He has been working as a lobbyist. He was working as a lobbyist and selling influence around Washington. He was working for Freddie Mac - heard of those guys? He says that he's just been a historian, I would like him to release his records, what was his work product?" Gingrich countered that he was never a lobbyist, and called on Romney, in turn, to release records of his own business dealings.
