Newt Gingrich Rips President Obama’s Birth Control Policy

Newt Gingrich has noted that President Obama’s health care policy oversteps its bounds, and that he’ll support Mitt Romney if Romney wins the GOP nomination for president.
Trying mightily to stay relevant after it has become increasingly clear that Mitt Romney will probably get the nod as the Republican presidential candidate for the upcoming election, Newt Gingrich has taken to blasting President Obama’s policies even more than usual. The latest is the current administration’s requirement that some religious hospitals offer birth control, free of co-pays, under his new health care law. Gingrich is up in arms about the requirement, as are the Catholic Church and the other GOP presidential candidates.

Speaking on NBC’s "Meet the Press," Gingrich said, "This is a tremendous infringement of religious liberty. Every time you turn around the secular government is shrinking the rights of religious institutions in America." It’s worth noting that the specific policy was actually introduced last August, but has come to the fore once again after Catholic churches throughout the country publicly read letters that spoke out against the policy.

Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism in 2009, said, "The fact is what you’re saying is there cannot be a genuine Catholic hospital. It will have to be subordinated to a secular government." Gingrich made even more headlines when he said he would support rival Mitt Romney in the general election if Romney receives the GOP nod. He is at odds with Romney on many issues, but noted, "I believe President Obama is such a direct threat to the future of this country that I will support the Republican nominee because I believe that President Obama is a disaster." Indeed, that seems to be the message from the entire GOP field.
