Have you ever got the feeling where you think your just not good enough for anything. Or for anyone? Sitting back stage leaning up against a toilet surely lets you know. I could her Angie singing up on stage as the crowd practically screamed their lungs off showing that she deserved to be the winner of the Instant Star singing contest. Imagining her winning the contest made me lean back over the toilet again. I can not let her win. She already has everything someone could possibly get, this time, it's my turn to shine. Suddenly a knock sounded on the door. "Jess, you okay?!" called my best friend Corey from the other side of the door. "I don't know if I can do this Corey..." It fell silent for a while before I heard someone say "She's going to be on in five minutes." I could feel all my insides twist as I pictured myself standing in front of a crowd of one-thousand people. Getting up from the floor with trembling knees, I made my way out of the bathroom stall just as Angie finished the last verse to her song.
As I opened the door, I seen Corey standing there with a worried look on his face. "I'm fine," I told him. "I can do this. Everything will be good." Ha, I hope so. Grabbing my guitar I made my way to the front stage just before passing Angie. "Don't even try. Everyone knows I'm going to win." She shoved me with her shoulder before moving on. Maybe she was right. Maybe I shouldn't even waste my time out there. Everyone in my school knows that Angie is the best singer there ever was. Perhaps could be. I'm just some girl who writes stupid songs with my lame guitar. "Don't listen to her. Honestly, I thought her voice was a little rash for my style." Someone spoke from behind. I didn't turn around. I was to busy looking at the crowd through a small opening in the blue velvet curtain. "I can't do this." Ignoring the person behind me, I simply just spoke to myself. "Yes, you can." It was a male voice, that's for sure.
His presence behind me made me relax a little which was weird, seeing as how I didn't even know who he was. Just then as I made my way to turn around and ask him why he was even encouraging me on, he was gone. I saw the lights grow dim and heard the crowd fall silent. That was my cue, just as the host said, "Please welcome our next performer, Jessica Andrews!" Grabbing my guitar, I made my way to center stage taking a seat on the stool that they had provided me. The stage was so dark, that I couldn't even see my own family standing within the crowd. As I played the first string on my guitar, the lights slowly started to come back, leaving a spot light on me and only me. Taking a deep breath, I began to sing.
I've been trying too hard
I've been spinning around
Got people chasing me down
Gotta find a way back to my world somehow, somehow
Right now I wanna get lost inside of a song
Where there's no right or wrong
In my room all alone is where I belong
My life is mine once I'm behind the door
Standing up now, I started to get in to it. As I played my guitar and sang, I made my way all over the stage. Instead of singing off into the distance, I actually started to sing to the crowd as I watched them nod their heads and start to dance to the song. MY song.
I grab a handful of strings
I've been dying to play
It carries me far away
I don't need to explain when I've got nothing to say, oh yeah
If I break down it's all the sound I make
Keeper of my secrets
Part of all my dreams
Somehow we're connected
From a whisper to a scream
As I continued to sing, I searched the crowd looking for my family. Sure enough, they were in the front row, wide eyed glowing with brilliant proud smiles. I smiled at them while still singing. I could not believe I was up hear singing like this. Nor have I ever thought people would actually enjoy it. I couldn't help it, now and again I would let a laugh out through the song as I looked over at the judges, only to receive smiles and approving nods of the head. I could not believe this was happening. Singing the final chorus to my song, I let it fade away in my voice.
Whenever we're together no one's a star
I can pour it all out right from the heart
If it's up to me, we'll never be apart
I'm in love with my guitar, oh yeah
I'm in love with my guitar
As I ended the last verse to the chorus, the crowd died down to a silent whisper. My heart dropped. Smile faded. It was as if you would be able to here a needle click against the floor. What was happening? I thought they liked my song, I mean they were all dancing and enjoying it, right? This could not be happening. I must be imagining it. I looked over to the curtain and saw Angie standing there with her little devilish smirk. Just as i felt tears start to prickle the back of my eyes, the crowd erupted in a fit of screams! They were actually cheering for me? ME! The tears that we prickling my eyes soon faded away. Looking over at the curtain again, I could see Angie's face fall and then see her disappear into the darkness of the backstage. As the host made her way up on stage, she gave me a hug with a genuine smile. "That was such an excellent song Jessica!
It seems that the audience thinks so too." Turning to the camera and the crowd, "Will the rest of the other contestants please join us up on stage!" I watched as ten other people appeared out from behind the stage curtain, one of them including Angie. This was where the pit of my stomach begin to do flip flops and twists in all sorts of directions. I had heard the other people sing, but they were not as good as Angie. So what made me think I have a shot at beating her? Perhaps it was that mystery person from backstage who told me I could do it. Who actually believed in me without even knowing me. As I stood on the stage with the other performers, I waited for the pretty host to retrieve the envelope that contained the future of one our lives. Fingers crossed behind my back, she opened it...
