New Scientific Inventions of 2010

This year witnessed the inception of many new scientific breakthroughs by way of inventions and discoveries! Let's check out some such new scientific inventions of 2010 to see what science offered us this year in terms of technology and progress.
Science does not know its debt to imagination.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Science is all about having an open imagination, not being afraid of making mistakes and asking the right questions. Almost all old and new scientific inventions and discoveries owe their origins and existence to these three essential human attitudes! Although most inventions have been results of deliberate conceptualization and research, time has also stood testimony to a number of accidental inventions that changed the world! Right from the invention of the wheel, by prehistoric humans, to more advanced inventions that changed the world (like gunpowder, antibiotics, aircraft, telephone, etc.). Science has experienced only progress and advancement in the hands of humankind. In line with such scientific progression, let us look at some new scientific inventions of 2010 that have given actual form to various scientific and imaginary concepts which were previously ridiculed as the ravings of a madman!

Some Smart Inventions of the Year 2010

Check out the following new scientific inventions of 2010 to get an idea of the infinite expanse of scientific scope. Looking at these new scientific inventions and discoveries make us bold enough to hope to see fictitious-as-of-now, scientific technologies and concepts, which we have only read about in science fictions novels and seen in sci-fi movies, take material shape! Indeed, the following new inventions of 2010 give a new definition to the phrase greatest inventions of all time.

SmartSight: In times of war and defense missions, you never know whether an enemy is waiting round the corner, aiming his weapon, ready to shoot at the slightest maneuver on your side! SmartSight enabled rifles bridge this gap between assumption and accurate awareness of armed enemy presence in "cornered" situations. So that the army can get an upper hand over the armed miscreants. The rifle sight camera is able to transmit real-time video footage of what is round the corner, using wireless technology, without the soldier having to risk taking a sneaking peek to find out! The inventor of this novel warfare technology is Matthew Hagerty!

SixthSense: Developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhD aspirant at the MIT Media Lab, SixthSense makes your dreams of playing Morpheus and Neo come true! This wearable gestural interface literally turns the whole world into your computer! The entire device is assembled out of a pocket projector, a camera and a mirror. The projector and camera are connected to a mobile computing device which the user carries in his pocket. The camera functions by tracking the hand gestures and movements of the user and the projector can display visual data upon any surface like walls, tables, boards, etc. The programming of the device is such that the video stream information relayed by the camera is processed by the software in sync with the visual tracking fiducials that are worn by the user at the tip of his/ her fingers. For example, if you wish to take a picture, all you need to do is frame the subject using your hands by forming a rectangle by touching the right index finger to the left thumb and the left index finger to the right! Yes, that's all you need to click a pic using SixthSense! Also, if you're reading a book and wish to take a printout of only a part of a particular page, you just need to use your thumb and forefinger and act like pinching out that portion of the page and deliver the "pinched" portion to the printer - your printout is ready before you even realize what just happened.

Sony 3D 360 Hologram: Fascinated by space age hologram technology depicted in sci-fi movies? Well, it has actually been given shape by Sony. The best part is, you need no special glasses or eye gear to view 3 dimensional objects. The hologram 3D 360 technology enables viewers to see an object inside its cylindrical interface and impart an almost-supernatural 3D graphics effect to such an object. Straight out of Star Trek, isn't it?

Teleportation: Well, yes, I do confess that I am an X-Men junkie and that may make me sound delusional when I say that Nightcrawler is for real! Well, not literally, but his ability to teleport may soon be commercially available! No, there is currently no device available on the market which you can, say, tie round you wrist or wear around your neck which can make you cover miles' distance within the batting of an eyelid! However, scientific researchers at the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland have been successfully able to teleport information from one atom to another, both placed in containers a meter apart from each other!

Waterless Washing Machine: With the increasing need to save water, the waterless washing machine designed by Xeros is one of the most utilitarian and brilliant new scientific inventions of this decade! This washing machine employs beads of nylon and uses a spin cycle to clean dirty and soiled clothes and linen. No-water-wash translates into zero dryer requirement which means that besides saving water, it also saves time that clothes and linen spend in a dryer.

Those were some of the new inventions that (I'm sure it wouldn't be considered an exaggeration) also double up among the best inventions of all time! That was a snapshot of some eclectic scientific inventions of 2010 among many other path breaking inventions and new scientific discoveries of 2010! Looking at these brilliant scientific breakthroughs, we can give axiomatic status to one of the most well-known and much used phrases - the sky is the limit!
