Never Forgotten - Chapter 1
This story is about four children who go on an adventure into some woods and find something called a memory box which holds toys and some other things from a different generation.
One long hot summer's day three children named Ava, Carla and Joseph started their long day at school. Before their lesson's started their class teacher informed them that a new student would be joining their class. As she was speaking a boy walked into the class room looking very shy, their teacher introduced him as Colin.
For a couple of weeks Colin sat alone, not wanting to play with the other children. Joseph Carla and Ava noticed that Colin was doing this and went and asked him if he would like to join them in a game of football, or something.
Colin replied "I would love to come and play, thanks guys."
The school holidays were coming closer, and the children were always together, inside and outside school, they only lived a couple of doors away from each other which they enjoyed very much, and their parents also liked to see them all so close.
Near the start of the holidays Joseph decided that he wanted to explore the woods that were at the back of his house. Colin loved the idea, but the girls did not. Carla complained "I'm not going in there, there could be anything in there that could hurt us."
Colin looked at her and replied "Don't be scared we will all be together" Ava looked a little scared but asked " will you hold my hand Joseph?" after a while they persuaded Carla that if she felt scared at any time they would turn back and go home to Josephs.
As they walked Colin and Carla walked behind the other two. "Colin may I ask you why you wanted to come in here?" She asked.
"I don't know really an adventure I suppose." He replied.
"But aren't you a little scared?"
Colin took a while to answer Carla's question. "I suppose I am a little scared, but I have my best friends with me so I know that I am safe."
With that answer Carla just smiled and hugged Colin.
They all carried on walking in silence until Joseph shouted. "What's that?"
The girls screamed and ran at each other. Joseph walked over to where he was looking.
"Leave it Joe, come back you may get hurt." The girls shouted after him, but Joseph did not listen he just carried on walking.
"Hey guys come look at this, I think I have found a cave or something." The other three decided they would go and have a look at what their friend had found.
They decided that it did not look scary but that they would not go in unless they had torches, so with that they walked back home talking about what could be down there. When they all got back they sat down at the edge of the woods and just stared. Ava was the first to speak. "We should go back tomorrow; I have some torches that I'm sure my dad would let us use." Carla smiled "sure another adventure." Joseph and Colin at the same time said "Are you sure you two aren't going to be scared?"
They all sat thee laughing until it was time for them to go. As they parted to go home they all shouted. "Tomorrow at ten."
The next morning they all got up early, as they were really excited about what they would find. Carla thought it would be jewelry, Ava thought it would be treasure, Colin thought it would be bodies (as he had a very weird imagination) and Joseph thought, well Joseph never did think about what it could be he just really wanted to go and see what it was.
At 10 o'clock on the dot they all turned up at the same spot they had left each other last night. Ava handed each of them a torch, "Here we go guys, let's go and see what treasure awaits us."
As they headed towards the hole that Joseph had found the day before, they each sang a line from a song they had decided to make up.
"I ho I ho it's off to see we go."
"With torches and friends."
"And thoughts in our hands."
"I ho I ho I ho I ho."
When they came to the opening of the hole they each one by one looked around to see what the others were thinking. They entered one after the other. Joseph then Ava, then Carla and Colin at the back. They didn't have to go far before they came across a big box.
"I was right, it's treasure." Shouted Ava.
They all grabbed the box and carried it out of the hole and into the sunlight. Each of them took a turn in trying to open the box, but in turn none of them having any luck at doing so.
For a while they sat there in silence, until Joseph spoke, "Let's go back to mine. I'm sure my dad will have something in his garage that will help us open this box." So each of them once again grabbed a part of the box and headed back out of the woods and towards Josephs dad's garage to find a tool that would open this special box they had found.
Once they were inside the garage the all began looking for things that would work. Soon Colin appeared from behind a tall stack of boxes holding a large crow bar. "See if this works guys." And within a matter of minutes the big box was lay open showing them what was inside. They were all expecting to see coins, crowns or even a treasure map, but there was nothing of that sort.
Ava was the first to approach the box, she reached inside and pulled out a photo. The photo showed four children, these children looked around the same age as them. Attached to the photo was a letter. The letter read.
Hello, we are Marvin, Marcel, Caraline and Adam. We are all 14 years of age and we live in the year 1860. Within this box you have found is some things that we find very special to us. We have put them in to show you what things were like in our time. We hope that you find our things interesting and enjoy them as much as we did, and also we hope that you will follow in what we have done, so that the children of the future can learn about the way you lived as we hope you have done from what you are about to find.
For days the children looked through the box and tried to understand what those children from 1860 were on about when they said, follow in what we have done.
Carla was the first to realize what they meant. "They mean create a memory box, which contains things that we find precious to us that we would like children of the future to learn about."
Each of them had an idea about: what they should put in, what they should put the things in, what they should write in the letter, how they should be in the photo and if they should write letters with their belongings explaining what they are and what they mean to them.
Ava decided she was going to put in her scrap book, she also wrote a letter telling who ever found the box why she had placed the book within. "This is my favorite belonging as it shows pictures of my family and friends who mean everything to me. I hope that you keep it safe as I have done ever since starting placing photos inside."
Carla put in her best piece of jewelry, in her letter she wrote, "Within this little package you will find my best piece of jewelry that I had been saving up for since I was age 11, and I am now age 14. I love this bracelet as it helped me to become the money saver that I am at the time of writing this letter. I hope that you look after it as much as I did, wear it with pride if you wish to, and learn as I did to save for the things you most desire."
Colin put in his toy car that he had built with his brother. His letter said. "This car was hand built by me and my older brother. It means a lot to me as my brother is no longer alive as I write this letter. I hope you look after our car, and treasure it as much as I did, and please whatever you do treasure the moments you have with your brothers and sisters as time is limited." As he wrote the letter a tear dropped from his cheek and smeared the last few words of the letter.
Joseph could not decide what to put in, for weeks he looked around his bedroom and house, he asked his friends and family what they think he should put in, but still he could not decide what to put into the memory box.
After nearly two weeks he finally decided what he was going to put in, but what he had decided was way too important to put in and would not fit inside, his most precious thing was his family. So he took a picture of them and on the back he wrote a little something, this said "This is my family, my everything, all so very special to me as I hope that yours are to you."
After two weeks of finding things to put in their box, they all came together at the edge of the hole they had first found the old big memory box of the children of 1860. Outside the hole they sat and wrote their letter and took a picture to show the finders whose belongings were within.
Their letter read:
Our names are Ava, Carla, Colin and Joseph, we are all aged 14 and we live in the year 1959. We found a box that contained people's belongings from the year 1860, their letter read along the same lines as ours is about to. You will find within our favorite things that we will miss dearly once this lid is closed. Each of the special things you find, has a letter attached explain what they are and what they meant to us. Also we hope that you in turn will create a memory box of you own as we did after the children of the year 1860.
P.S. Also within are the things we found.
They had all decided to put their belongings in the same box they had found, as to them they felt it made everything seem more special. When they had placed the box in the hole they walked away and never looked back, they never even stepped foot inside those woods again.
We are now in the year 2011 and the children are now aged 66, and as far as they know the box has not been found. They are all still friends and still live near to each other and stay in contact all the time.
For a couple of weeks Colin sat alone, not wanting to play with the other children. Joseph Carla and Ava noticed that Colin was doing this and went and asked him if he would like to join them in a game of football, or something.
