Neti Pot Danger

Historically, the neti pot was used in hatha yoga in ancient India. Approximately 30 years ago, it was introduced to the western world. The neti pot is used for clearing the blocked nasal passage, through controlled breathing techniques. This pot flushes out nasal congestion and cleans the nasal cavity. Flushing nasal canal with the neti pot was primarily a part of the purification technique, which was necessary before performing yoga. Using neti pot is seemingly a complex technique of clearing a runny nose, which can be mastered without experiencing any danger.

What is a Neti Pot?
The neti pot is an instrument which is used for clearing the blocked nasal passage. It is a small pot with a small spout attached to its bottom. The neti pots have a handle at the other side of the spout and they can be found in various materials like clay, glass, ceramic, plastic and various metals. This pot is filled with a warm saline solution. The temperature and concentration of this solution is same as the body fluid. This saline solution is then passed into the nasal cavity in such a way, that it goes inside through one nostril and comes out from the other one. More advanced neti pot technique include water inlet from the nostrils and outlet from the oral cavity.

Benefits of Neti Pot
The process of neti is beneficial for the body, as it removes the dirt particles, mucus and bacteria within the nasal cavity. As the neti pot clears the nasal cavity, it inhibits various complications related to the sinus infections, hay fever, sinus headache, upper respiratory tract infections like sore throat and cough, post nasal drip, tonsillitis and inflammation of the adenoids. Using neti pot is a big relief in medical conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Neti pot soothes the brain and hence, it is beneficial for the conditions like migraine, headache, hysteria and general mental tension. Neti pot is also healthy for other organs, including the eyes, olfactory nerves, pituitary glands and pineal glands. Its usage is also found beneficial in case of middle ear infection and tinnitus.

Neti Pot Danger
Many people are always inquisitive about the possibilities of any side effects of the neti pot. In my opinion, there is no such thing as neti pot danger; if one is well aware about the proper methods of usage. There is nothing dangerous in using the neti pot and hence, it is important to not to be afraid during the process. Fear only aggravates the possibility of a danger, if any. Improper techniques and usage of incorrect saline solution can cause a few dangers of neti pot. These dangers include pain inside the nose, nasal burning, irritation and stinging feeling inside the nose, drowning sensation, nosebleeds and drainage of saline solution through the eyes. These dangers are observed by at least 10% of the neti pot users. Most of these dangers are not severe and they can always be avoided by practicing the correct neti pot techniques. As a matter of fact, amongst various techniques of nasal irrigation, neti pot is the mostly recommended technique by many ear, nose and throat surgeons.

There is no such thing as the neti pot danger, when the person is aware of the its proper usage.
