Prologue

Mark ran a hand threw his blonde hair and sighed. He sat down on the black couch in the living room and rested his head back. Closing his eyes, he got flashbacks of when his life when his life was just perfect. Beautiful wife, great kids. And just one month after the twins were born, he was divorced, had his boys taken away from him. But, thank god, his ex-wife had something so precious so him behind. As if on cue, sounds of crying erupted from the baby monitor. He jumped up and rushed towards the room. As soon as 1-month year old daughter saw his face, she squealed in delight. He smiled and picked her up in his arms. "Hey, sweetie."he said gently, tickling her under her armpits making her erupt into shrieks of laughter. Kissing her on her forehead, he put her back in her crib after she'd fallen asleep. He headed back downstairs and after a few hours, Delilah woke up again, screaming for food.

Mark rushed up to her room and picked her up. "Hungry, baby ?" he asked as he descended the spiral staircase. Heading towards the stainless steel kitchen, he set her down in her seat and gave her a spoon to play with. Laughing as she happily banged the spoon on the table in rhythm, he prepared some baby food for her with the help of the instructions. He put the food down on the table and sat down too. All the while, Delilah was staring at the bowl curiously. She looked up at him as if saying, 'I'm gonna have to eat that ?' "I'm sorry, honey. But it's the best i can do right now."her father said. She opened her mouth and let him insert the spoon in her mouth. After eating the full bowl, her eyes started closing. Mark picked her up and by the time he put her in her crib, she was fast asleep with one hand balled up in a fist, under her chin.Smiling, Mark leaned down and kissed her forehead. Delilah smiled in her sleep. Mark's smile went broader. He couldn't believe how lucky he was. Sure, he had lost his job, wife and the rest of his kids but he had also got this beautiful angel. And he was sure, he was going to survive.
--------------6 months later------------------------------
Mark blew his whistle signaling everyone to line up and shoot baskets. Meanwhile, he jogged over to the bleachers where Delilah was babbling to herself. "Da da" she shrieked in delight when she saw Mark approaching. He picked her up and smilingly kissed her forehead. It was a wonder that she had talking when she was only a bit more than 7 months old. "You alright, honey ?" he said. Delilah nodded as if she understood what he said. He chuckled and put her back in her baby carriage after kissing her forehead. The basketball players watched in awe as their tough coach completely melted at the sight of his daughter. After practice, Mark picked Delilah up and headed towards his car. Strapping her into her car seat, he himself got in the driver's seat and headed towards his house.
---------------4 years later--------------------
"Daddy!"Mark heard Delilah wail from the bathroom. He dropped whatever work he was doing and sped up the stairs and into the bathroom to see Delilah leaning inside the toilet seat. He held her hair back as she vomited all of her dinner. This was the 7th time she had thrown up and Mark was getting worried. He had taken her to the doctor on the 2nd time but the doctor said that it was probably just food poisoning. But vomiting was not the only problems Delilah seemed to be having. She would have a killer headache in the morning but it would clear after a few hours and also, she would sometimes fall down while walking. She had never been clumsy but she insisted that her vision was blurred. Mark had also taken her to the optician but he said that her eyes were fine. Vince, Mark's best friend hurried up the stairs worried too. "You should get her checked up." he said. "I did. But I think this is much more than food poisoning."

Mark replied as he cleaned Delilah's mouth who had already dozed off. "She throws up all the time, she gets headaches, her visions blurs and she seems to be sleeping a lot lately. "Mark went on. And the very same day, he took her to the hospital to get some tests done." He held Delilah in his lap impatiently as she slept. Smiling down at her, he kissed her hair tenderly, then looked when he heard the doctor say his name. Mark was called inside the doctor's cabin and he carried Delilah with him. He sat down on the chair and waited. The doctor and took off his glasses and sighed. "I take it, that it's not good news. "Mark said worriedly. The doctor rubbed his forehead with his hand, then deciding to just get it out, he said, "Your daughter has brain cancer."
-------------------------------------------
"Come on, man. What happened ?" Vince asked as Mark sat frozen on the couch in his living room. Delilah was in her room, taking her afternoon nap. He got up and was headed towards the door when he hard a small voice say, "Daddy?" Both Vince and Mark turned to see Delilah on the stairs, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She walked towards him and outstretched her arms, asking for a hug. Mark picked her up and hug her tightly, burying his face in her jet black hair. "Why are you crying, daddy ?"Delilah whispered in his ear when she felt her hair getting wet with his tears. Mark pulled back and discreetly dried his tears and said, "I am not crying, sweetie. I am going for a walk. I'll be back in an hour." "Can I come ?"Delilah asked with pleading eyes. Mark shook his head. "You need to rest, baby. But, Uncle Vince will stay here." He set her down on the ground and as she said, "Love you daddy.", he kissed her forehead and said, "Love you too, honey." He kissed her cheek again , then went out the door.

Delilah turned to Vince and outstretched her arms and smiled when he picked her up. "Do you know what's bothering your daddy ?"he asked her as he set her down on the kitchen counter. Delilah shook her head and picked up the spoon and started playing with it. Vince sighed and kissed her forehead before going over to the fridge to get something for himself and Delilah to eat. About two hours later, Mark was back and wrapped Delilah in his arms. When he pulled back, he looked like he had been crying. Delilah gave him a sloppy kiss on the cheek making him smile. Carrying her upstairs, he set her down on her bed, then set down next to her. He needed to explain to her. He needed to tell her everything. Delilah waited patiently waited for him to say something, but when he didn't, she tugged at his sleeve and said, "Daddy, what's wrong ?" Hearing her sound so innocent brought tears to his eyes and he hugged her tightly. Delilah was getting more confused by the second. "Dude, you need to tell both of us what is bothering you."Vince said leaning against the doorway.

Mark kissed her forehead. After Mark explained to Vince what had happened, he remained silent for a long time. "I have no idea how to tell it to her." Mark admitted, looking at Delilah who was happily playing with her toys. "Leave it to me."Vince said patting his shoulder reassuringly. He headed over to Delilah, murmured something in her ear and they both left the room. About 20 minutes later, they came back and Delilah hopped into his lap and kissed his cheek. "Don't worry daddy. I'll be fine."she said hugging him. At that moment, it seemed like Delilah was the adult and Mark was the kid. She didn't shed a tear but Mark started sobbing. "You're right. We'll get through this."
