Skin rash refers to any change in the color, texture and appearance of the skin, which may or may not be associated with symptoms such as itching, inflammation, redness, pain and blisters. Rash can affect in some parts of the body (localized) or the whole body (generalized). It is caused either due to infection (bacterial or fungal) or without infection. One of the most common skin rashes is dermatitis, which is characterized by inflammation along with redness and itching of the skin. There are many types of dermatitis based on the causes and their symptoms such as dry skin, atopic (mostly hereditary), allergic, contact, nummular (rash due to skin injury), seborrhoeic (caused due to toxic substances), etc. Many of the cases of skin rashes are caused due to allergic reactions.

Skin rash is treated under the supervision of dermatologists, either by applying creams or following certain medications such as steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics, etc., depending upon the severity of the rashes. However, there may be chances that the skin cream itself is allergic to the skin and results in rash. To avoid from such consequences, one can try certain natural skin care tips based on herbs, spices, vegetables and other natural products that have no side effects. Let’s see some of the natural remedies that can effectively help in curing rash.

Applying olive oil to the affected skin is one of the most powerful natural remedies for reducing rash. Olive oil contains skin-healing substances that are useful for treatment of rashes. One can even get immediate relief after application of olive oil.

Aloe vera is another potent succulent plant that is mostly used for skin care. One can use good aloe vera gels that are available in the market. If possible use fresh pulp. You can cut an aloe vera leaf lengthwise and extract the colorless pulp from inside the leaf (avoid yellow fluid near the surface of leaf). Apply gel 3 to 4 times a day for effective cure of skin rash.

Application of cod-liver oil that contains vitamin E (antioxidants) is found to be useful in treating rash. One can also consume vitamin E supplements available in the market that has similar effect. However, care should be taken while taking medicine on one's own, in terms of quantity, brand, and the instructions given.

Oatmeal bath is also used to get relief from skin rash. Add one cup of uncooked oatmeal in bathing water and leave for 10 minutes; take bath without using soap. Another method is to boil oatmeal in water and use it for bathing.

Studies have found out that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the most beneficial antioxidants, which is helpful in treating skin rashes. Hence, consuming citrus fruits that are a rich source of ascorbic acid is advisable. One can also include foods such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes and broccoli that are rich in vitamin C.

Other natural remedies include applying baking powder, basil juice, mint juice, almond oil and chamomile tea over the affected skin. Putting cotton soaked in ice water over the rashes is also beneficial but care has to be taken to wipe of the water and keep the affected area dry. Don’t expose the rash to sunlight as far as possible.

The effectiveness of the remedies cited above depends upon the rash type and its severity. It is advisable to consult a qualified physician if the symptoms of rash increase after following a specific treatment method. Don’t scratch the affected areas as it can worsen the rashes. Always consult with the doctor before using any lotion or cream. While bathing and cleaning purposes, use a mild soap.
