Native Americans are those groups of people who are native to regions of North America. The culture of Native Americans is surely an interesting one with many shades throughout history. These large tribes had their own preferences and ways for going about things in their daily routine. They depended upon Mother Earth for their source of food. The Native Americans in California relied mainly upon animals such as deer and rabbits and vegetables that were grown in that particular area. However, today, Native American food consists of some modern inputs as well. The modern-day Native American cuisine has a wide range of options. In the olden days, these tribes also relied on their farms whereas few preferred to move to different areas in search of food. Indian corn, pumpkins, beans, sweet potatoes, peanuts, tomatoes, etc were some of the main ingredients of Native American cuisine. Native American Recipe #1

Meat Pie

Ingredients
Lean ground beef
Chopped onion (½ cup)
Clove of garlic - crushed (1)
Salt (¾ teaspoon)
Tomatoes (1 can)
Lemon juice (1 teaspoon)
Crushed chilies (½)
Chopped fresh spinach (2 cups)
Powdered mustard (½ teaspoon)
Pastry for a 9-inch pie shell

Preparation
Firstly, you need to combine all the filling ingredients in a frying pan. Now, bring this to a boil. Stir the preparation so that the meat pieces are further broken up. Let it cook uncovered for around 30 minutes. Then, chill the preparation for about 2 hours.

Then, roll the pastry for the pie. Make tiny saucer-shaped circles. Now, place the portions of the filling in the center of the pastry circle. Using adequate amount of water dampen the edges and fold the circle in half. Press the edges together and place on the greased cookie sheet. Brush this with a beaten egg.

Next, you need to bake the same at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes in an oven till it turns golden brown. Once done, you can add the spices of your choice. Tabasco sauce and jalapeno peppers are an ideal option! Opt for something mild if it doesn’t suit your taste buds.

Native American Recipe #2

Basic Galette

Ingredients
All-purpose flour (4 cups)
Salt (1 teaspoon)
Milk (1 1/2 cups)
Butter (2 tablespoons)
Baking powder (1 tablespoon)

Preparation
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and then grease a baking sheet. Then, take a large bowl and add some flour and baking powder to this. Sprinkle with some salt. Also add the butter till the mixture turns into coarse crumbs. Now, you would need to add the milk. Ensure this dough holds well together. Shape the dough into a round and then, place it on the prepared baking sheet. You need to bake the dough in the oven for 30 minutes. The origins of this recipe were found in the early tribes that settled in the mountains.
