Some of the best known national parks of Northern India are:-
1.Corbett National Park, Uttranchal:-This national park is the first national park of India established in the year 1936. It is also the first wildlife sanctuary of India which was opted to launch the "Project Tiger" in 1973. Located in the Nainital of Pauri-Garwhal and Bijnore districts of Uttaranchal has attained its name from the famous hunter-turned-environmentalist Jim Corbett. Spreads to an area of approx. 500 sq.km. Corbett provides shelter to various magnificent animals such as critically endangered Bengal Tigers, Boars, Leopards, Spotted Deers, Himalayan Black bear, resident and migratory birds like crested serpent eagles, blossom headed parakeet, red jungle fowl, seven types of amphibians, fishes and 37 types of dragonflies.
2.Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan:-Located in the Sawai Madhopur district of south-eastern Rajasthan, Ranthambore is one of the popular national parks of India. It has attained the National Park status in the year 1980. The 392sq km area of this Park is an wild abode of Tigers, Nilgai, Dhole,Wild Boar, Sambar, Hyena, Sloth Bear, Chital, Leopard and some rare species of birds, reptiles and plants.
3.Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Rajasthan:-Keoladeo Ghana National Park, previously known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is famous as a wonderful bird's paradise. It is a man made habitat for the wildlife built 250 years ago by Maharajah of Suraj Mal of Bharatpur princely state. More than 375 species of resident and migratory birds are available here. Every year thousands of migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia comes to India to spend the winter season. If you are keen bird observer than you must visit this national park.
4.Dachigam National Park, Jammu and Kashmir:-This national park is located just just 22km away from Srinagar, mainly famous for Hangul or Kashmir stag. From 1910, it was considered as a protected area under the patronage of Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir. In the year 1981, it was declared as a national park. It stretches to an area of 141sq km and provides shelter to several wildlife apart from Hangul or Kashmir Stag such as Musk Deer, Leopards, Himalayan Gray Langurs, Leopard Cats, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Brown Bear, Jackals, Hill Fox, Himalayan Weasel, Yellow-throated Martens, Jungle Cats, Long-tailed Marmots and Otters.
5.Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh:- This national park of Northern India is located in the Lakhimpur-Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. Encompassing a sprawling area of 614 sq km Dudhwa national park is famed for its varied and fruitful Terai Eco systems. It is one of the major home for Swamp deer or the largest Indian deer having twelve antlers along with other wildlife species like Bengal Floricans, Tiger, Jackal Leopard, Sloth Bear, Leopard Cat, and The Jungle Cat. It is also famous for some species of local and migratory water bird species.
6.Sultanpuri National Park, Haryana:- It is another famous site for bird watching in India. Covering an area of 359 sq km, this national park of India is located on the Gurgaon-Faruknagar road in Haryana. It has attained its national park status in the year 1981. It is a home to the various species of resident and migratory birds namely cranes, flamingoes, ruddy shelducks, pelicans, gadwalls, grey lags, mallards, shovellers, pochards, teals, plovers, spoonbills and red-wattled lapwings. Here, you can also view large variety of wildlife such as blackbuck, hog deer, hedgehog, striped hyena, honey badgers, Indian porcupine, leopards, nilgai, wild dog, sambar, caracal, four horned antelope and wild pigs.
7.Great Himalayan National Park, Himachal Pradesh:- Sprawling across an area of 620 sq km Great Himalayan National Park is also known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Great Himalayan National Park. It is positioned in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh is famous for 375 species of various animal species mainly for the snow leopard and 68 species of birds. In the forest of this national park, you will also get to see wild mountain goats and sheep like the Himalayan tahr, flying squirrel, langurs, Bharal, goral and serow, musk deer, leopard, black bears, wolf and rhesus macaques.
