Narcissistic Spouse and Depression - How to Recover after Relationship with Narcissist

It is very difficult to get rid of the mental hooks narcissist has skillfully embedded into your brain. Understanding the reasons why you feel so attached to narcissist will help you in the process of ending relationship with narcissist. The aim of this article is to give support and advice to people who are dealing with problems related to mental abuse, narcissism, cheating and emotional coldness in a relationship.
Relationship with narcissist is often causing feelings of depression, anxiety and insecurity. These feelings are the result of sudden change in the behavior of narcissist when compared to the beginning of the relationship. In the beginning of the relationship narcissist is often very loving and caring. It is typical for a narcissist to start to talk about "love" and "loving" even before narcissist has had a chance to really get to know you. This kind of behavior is good demonstration of the core of the problem: Narcissist is not in touch with the reality but is idealizing the relationship and building dream images of eternal, supreme love.

As a result of this kind of behavior of narcissist, you may fall very strongly in love with narcissist. It is natural for us to start to develop feelings towards someone who shows very openly how much he or she loves us, especially when that someone appears too good to be true, is charming, polite, caring etc. Unfortunately what seems too good to be true often turns out to be just that. This is often the case with narcissist.

As the relationship continues, loving behavior of your narcissistic spouse slowly starts to change. Narcissist can become emotionally cold, distant and uncaring, even cruel. Idealization phase is over and narcissist starts to get bored. This is the point when narcissist starts to look for the next provider of narcissistic supply and often ends up cheating or having an affair.

You are still strongly in love with your narcissistic husband or wife and so you are experiencing strong emotional pain when you see this kind of unexplained change in the behavior of someone who only short while ago swore he or she loves you more than anything else. This unpleasant change in the behavior or your spouse can make you feel very sad, depressed and disoriented, especially if you find out your narcissistic spouse is cheating on you or is having an affair.

It is important to understand that the love you feel towards your narcissistic husband or wife is love towards something that was never real. You fell in love with the dream image your own mind created based on the behavior of narcissist in the beginning of the relationship. As time goes by and you start to see the true face of narcissist, you have already become so attached to narcissist that it is very difficult to end the relationship. But eventually you will see narcissist as he or she really is and you will realize it is best to get out from the relationship that is slowly depriving you of your energy and happiness and turning you into depressed, sad human being who is no longer able to enjoy life.

When you realize that the person you fell in love with was never real but merely a mask hiding the true face of narcissist, you can start the process of recovery and eventually you are able to move on with your life. Do not waste your life in a toxic relationship. The sooner you realize your narcissistic husband or wife can never provide you with what you want the most (unconditional love, respect and caring), the sooner you are able to break mentally free from narcissist and start healing.
