My Man 5
So it’s official then! BJ’s new girlfriend is Cybil. Hmmm… this could be interesting. It is the start of their weird and chaotic ‘relationship’. Who’ll crack first, him or her?
‘WHAT?!’ Rae exclaimed. ‘You agreed to his terms?!’ she sat on the couch. ‘Cy you know he can’t sue you for that.’
Cybil touched her glasses, sighed and then resumed arranging the DVDs on the self. After her Mom regained her consciousness, Cy left the hospital and went to her part time job. There she saw Rae busy cleaning the whole shop. ‘Yes he can Rae. After Mom was transported inside the OR, I promised to repay him immediately and…’ Cy sighed and narrated everything to Rae.
‘But he can’t just sue you for that!’ Rae stubbornly protested.
‘Rae,’ Cybil said calmly. ‘Have you been listening? He can and-’ she said immediately not giving her best fiend time to react. ‘I can’t afford-’
‘Cy, I’m here. I can help you and you know that.’ Rae whispered. ‘Why didn’t you call me?’
Cybil audibly sighed, she sat on the floor with both of her feet tucked in and then she looked at Rae. ‘After seeing Mom on our living room’s floor, I panicked and just like that…’ Cybil threw her hands desperately on the air. ‘My four years of training suddenly disappeared; I couldn’t think straight, I even forgot I’m a nurse and a trained rescuer.’ She smiled weakly. ‘At that moment, all I want was to bring Mom to the hospital.’ Cy looked away. I don’t even bothered Brent’s presence, she thought silently.
Rae couldn’t believe her ears. It was the first time she’d heard Cybil talked about ‘panic’. The word ‘panic’ and Cybil didn’t actually go hand in hand. She never saw Cy ever panicked before, not even in the stickiest situations like resuscitating their patients in the ICU, responding as a rescuer in a bus accident or even inside the OR, she remained calm. She’s always composed and graceful in handling such situation. She’s that good and that confident in her skills.
Sniff. Sniff. Sniff.
Rae abruptly stopped psychoanalyzing her best friend. She couldn’t help herself. She smiled. Always a cry baby, she thought. They were friends since high school, Cy might changed her looks and her fashion but she’s still the same girl Rae met years ago.
‘I know you’re willing to help Rae but I don’t want to cause you any trouble.’ She touched her glasses and looked down. ‘If you get that huge amount from your account, they might locate your whereabouts.’
Rae snorted. ‘Their not fools, Cy. They already knew but they just can’t drag me home. I know their still planning and waiting for the perfect time.’ Rae said meaningfully.
‘But still I don’t want to cause you any trouble.’ Cy once again sighed. ‘I can handle this.’
Rae sighed and shook her head. She studied Cy’s bowed head. For once Cybil, stop pretending you can handle everything! You just can’t, Rae silently though. Rae can’t tactlessly told Cybil those words. She knew pretty well, Cy will denied it and insists she can handle everything and make things worse. Rae heard another sob. ‘I thought you can handle this? Why you’re crying?’
Cybil removed her glasses and then wiped her eyes using the back of her hands. Looking at her, she’s like a toddler crying for her lost ball. ‘I’m worried…’ Sniff. Sob. Sniff. ‘A-about Mom’s Angina…’
‘And what about YOUR Angina?!’ Rae asked stoically. ‘Mommy Kate,’ she said referring to Cy’s mother. ‘Didn’t know you have it too.’
To that Cybil’s burden tripled. Her tears were uncontrollable! She kept on weeping.
‘Hey!’ Rae said. She stood up and seated next to Cy on the floor. ‘Okay, I’m sorry for bringing that up.’ She said hugging her best friend. ‘Just stop crying. People might think-’
‘Hey you two!’ their manager shouted. Cy quickly pulled back, wiped her tears, wore her glasses and there she saw a fat man in his late fifties standing near the door. ‘I didn’t pay you to chat, so do you job.’ That was it! He turned his back to them and entered his office.
‘I can cut off your business if I like!’ Rae whispered looking murderous at the office door.
Cybil wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and laughed softly at Rae. ‘But you’re not Raynabelle Antoinette Willis as of this moment, you’re just Rae.’ She said and then she asked seriously. ‘Missed your old life?’
Rae snorted. ‘Never!’ She said as if disgusted to the idea.
Why on earth Am I in this shit?! Cybil asked herself angrily. She was pissed to the asshole guy seated next to her, she was pissed being BJ’s new ‘girlfriend’, and she was pissed to fall for his charm. She knew too well guys like him only brought trouble. She shouldn’t let him befriended with her. She should give him a gap- Hold on, I never could have imagined this to happen! She thought silently. Not in my wildest dream could I ever imagine a guy like him will ask a girl like me to be his girlfriend. Pretend to be his girlfriend, contradicted instantly the other part of her. He didn’t actual like you Cybil, he just wants to use you- Cybil shook her head vigorously.
‘What’s wrong sweetheart? You okay?’ BJ asked sweetly.
Cybil sore she shivered upon hearing BJ’s sweet yet somehow seductive voice. She pushed her glasses up, crossed her arms on her chest and glared at the basketball superstar. Cy saw a naughty, lopsided grin on the guy’s kissable lips that would definitely make every girl’s knees weak but to Cybil, it didn’t affect her. Liar, opposed the other part of her, which happened to be her heart. Okay it may affect her but only a bit...just a little bit. He’s the basketball hottie after all.
BJ simply shifted his gaze towards Cybil then smiled lovingly. ‘Are you okay, sweetie?’ he teased. Cy rolled her eyes and a moment later he burst into laughter. He knew she was mad at him for just appearing in front of her house unannounced and insisted to drove her to the hospital. ‘You know what Cy, I think it’s better if we have an endearment. You know to make this relationship realistic.’ He said. ‘What do you think?’
She didn’t answer. She was making herself busy by looking outside the window and pretending she didn’t heard him.
‘Hmmm…’ he said as if thinking, his eyes were on the road. ‘Honey?’ she didn’t answer. ‘Sweetheart? Baby… or babe?’ still Cybil didn’t give an answer. ‘Oh c’mon, Cy! I think it’ll be fun.’ He paused for a moment. ‘How about Boo… or pooh… piglet…’ he trailed off. ‘That isn’t right.’ said BJ awkwardly.
Cybil pressed her lips together to stop herself from smiling.
‘Oh I know!’ he exclaimed all of a sudden. ‘What about Mine? Mine…’ he repeated. ‘Mine’s perfect!’
Cybil’s head snap immediately at BJ’s direction. ‘NO!’ she said firmly. ‘Can you just shut up?!’ SHUT UP!’ she said immediately as he was trying to oppose her. For the second time she rolled her eyes at him then focused her gaze at the window. Minutes later, Cy felt his gaze was on her. ‘Please eyes on the road.’ She said without looking at him. ‘I can’t afford to have an accident.’
BJ sighed then focused his eyes on the road. ‘I guess it’s time for me to…’ he cleared his throat. ‘Discuss to you my rules in this relationship or my rules to be my girlfriend.’ He said staring ahead.
She flinched and glared at him. ‘Oh so there is a rule?!’ she asked sarcastically.
His grip tightens to the staring wheel, making his knuckles white. ‘My girlfriend should be present on all of my games-’
She snorted and cut him off. ‘Yeah right. I got so many things to do… important things… than your silly, stupid games.’ She said tactlessly.
‘Those games are not silly or stupid, it’s as important as your…’ he paused for a moment to think for something. ‘… cases! Right, your case loads.’ Red light, BJ stopped the car and then looked at Cybil. ‘Can you at least let me finish first before you react? You’re always butting in!’ he took first a deep breath before he continues. ‘As I was saying, you should be present in my games, cheering for our team and wearing OUR color-’
‘But your color isn’t MY color.’ She interrupted. ‘Yours is blue and mine’s green.’ She said referring to their school colors. Cybil just can’t help herself to interrupt his sentences. She saw BJ glared at her. ‘Okay fine. You may continue MR. REYNOLDS.’ She said sarcastically and then she rolled her eyes.
‘You’re going to wear my color!’ he insisted. ‘You should give me your time, like any other normal relationship. You shouldn’t date or hang out with any guy other than me and Van. You should tell me your schedules, and you should give me all your mobile numbers.’ He said, he knew Cy got two mobile phones. ‘I’ll introduce you to Clarisse any time this week so you must be prepared.’ Green light, he started the car’s pace. ‘As for being my personal assistant, you should clean my place everyday, do the laundry, do the cooking, the gardening… in short your in charge with my household, everyday. In special occasions you’re also in charge with my reports and my thesis.’ He said without looking at her. He entered the hospital’s car park. ‘Before I forgot, you should quit working at the gasoline station. I’ll pay you big just to be my assistant and also my girlfriend.’
‘And how long do I need to serve you, Your Majesty?’ she asked sarcastically.
BJ pulled over then he smiled charmingly at her. ‘I’ll tell you when it’s over but as for being my girlfriend…’ he then became serious all of the sudden. ‘When Clarisse realize I’m worth all the risk and when she’s ready to have me as her boyfriend, that’s the time your free from me.’
Patience Cy… patience, she though as she was controlling herself from hitting BJ again. This guy was starting to get in Cy’s nerves. This guy is using me as a toy for his games! She sighed. As if I have much choice. I can do it! You can do it Cybil, I know you can, she peep talk. ‘Okay… are you done?’ Cybil asked. She first pushed her glasses up before she continued. ‘Here are my conditions.’ She cleared her throat. ‘No hugging, kissing, holding of hands and asking personal questions. You shouldn’t appear when ever you want, you can’t interfere in any of my personal problems, I’ll do the same to you and you just can’t order me around.
If I’ll say ‘no’ it means no, meaning NO endearment.’ She paused for a moment. ‘Only Clarisse,’ she said referring to BJ’s childhood friend and his love. ‘Will know I’m your…’ she raised both hand and made an imaginary quote. ‘Girlfriend. So that means you can’t introduce me to your family even your teammates. You can’t just introduce me to everyone. Let’s keep this ‘relationship’ a secret.’ She said proudly, clearly telling him she didn’t like to be his girlfriend. ‘You should follow everything I’ve said,’ she said smiling wickedly at him and then she raised her fist. ‘if you don’t want your nose to bleed. Is that clear BRENT?’
He chuckled. ‘I prefer BJ it suits me.’ He said amusingly. Well, the girl in front of him was definitely different from any normal girls he’d met, he’s not surprised.
‘What if I’ll say I don’t like calling you BJ.’ He tried to protest but was abruptly stopped as he saw Cy’s fist. Leaving not much of a choice, BJ just agreed. ‘Keep that up, Brent and I’m sure we’re going to get along.’ She said and immediately got off his car and walked inside the hospital.
Cybil immediately entered her mother room without knocking. ‘Hey Mom.’ She greeted. She saw her mother sitting on her bed and looking blankly at the window. ‘How are you feeling?’
Her Mom shifted her gazed slowly towards her and then she smiled seeing her. ‘I’m now okay. The world’s best nurse is here after all.’ she said jokingly.
Cybil snorted and checked her mother’s IV fluids and so was her ECG monitor. She sighed as she read it. There was still an abnormality in her waves, well what can she expect? Her Mom’s got an Angina after all. There was a knock. Cy was about to opened the door but was abruptly stop. The door flung wide open and like a flash of lightening, Kent rush towards their mother.
‘Mommy…’ he said as he was trying to carefully maneuver his arms to give their mom a hand. He knew pretty well that he needed to be careful with her mom’s tubings attached to her body.
Cybil frowned as she saw Kyle with BJ. ‘What are you doing here?’ she asked BJ. ‘And you two, you guys supposed to be in class today.’
Kent first kissed his Mom’s cheeks before he answer his sister’s question. ‘Our teacher is absent because she got a flu. So we’re dismissed early.’ He marched towards Cybil and gave her a kiss.
‘But you should call me.’ She said without looking at BJ. She could felt his gaze towards her.
Kyle snorted. He entered the room and sit lazily at the chair. ‘C’mon! We’re already ten years old! We can handle ourselves.’ He said proudly.
‘Oh really?!’ she said as if challenging her little brother. ‘Can you tell me who we’re lost last week-’
Then again Kyle snorted. ‘We’re as bad as you Cy, in terms of direction, that is.’
Cybil’s mouth fell open. She didn’t saw that one coming! She knew she was not that good at directions… okay she’s not good at all but somehow she can managed. Suddenly, Cybil heard someone laughing. She looked at her mother and then Kent, they were both laughing softly at her. Then lastly she glared at BJ. Cy saw him looked away from her and he was trying to suppressed a smile. She pushed her glasses up then cleared her throat and immediately the laughter cease.
‘Cy, why don’t you let your visitor-’
Still her eyes with BJ she said. ‘No need Mom. He’s leaving anyway.’
‘No he’s not!’ Kyle protested.
Cybil sighed. Leaving without a choice she let BJ enter the room. Her Mom expected an introduction so she gave it, without thinking twice. ‘Mom this is BJ Reynolds.’ She started then she looked at BJ. ‘BJ this is my Mom.’ She saw her Mom raised one of her brow as if expecting something. Cybil sighed again. I’m in a big shit! She though. ‘Ahm… he’s…my…’ she looked at BJ. ‘My…’ Oh come on Cy you can do it! Just say the word and be over it! ‘Bo-’
What’s wrong with this girl? Why can’t she just spit it out?! BJ asked himself. He simply pinched Cybil’s elbow to send her the massage.
‘He’s my… boy- boyfriend Mom.’ Finally! She managed to say it.
‘Oh My God!’ her mother exclaimed. She motioned Cybil to come closer and then she hugged her. ‘Finally you’ve moved on, Cy.’
BJ’s head snap instantly at Cybil’s direction the moment he heard Kate’s words. Okay, that was weird. Finally you’ve moved on?! What was that supposed to mean? BJ asked himself.
‘Mom!’ Cybil said trying to pull back.
‘So you were dating the first time we’ve met you?’ Kent asked politely and sweetly. He was beaming a big grin at BJ; obviously he was happy for his sister, for the both of them.
‘Yeah. We’ve dated for a month and after that everything was official.’ He said smiling happily at Cybil who was standing awkwardly near the ECG machine. ‘Nice to finally meet you Ma’am.’ He said courteously. He extended his hand for a handshake.
Instead of a handshake, Cy’s mother hugged him. ‘No Ma’am, just Kate and I’m glad to met you.’
‘Mom your wound…’
BJ pulled back. ‘How are you feeling, Kate?’
‘I’m good. I’m just happy for Cybil.’ She said while looking at her daughter. ‘Finally-’
‘Mom!!!’ Cybil shouted, interrupting her mother’s sentence. She needed to stop her mother from telling BJ the thing she tried to forget for the past six years. She sighed. She really felt guilty lying to her family about their relationship. The two of them never dated! She’s not actually BJ’s girlfriend! Their relationship is fake, false! What will she do if they found out the truth? Cybil sighed and then glared at BJ. This is entirely your fault, you jerk! She though.
‘Hmmm…’ Kyle said while eyeing her sister.
Cy cautiously step back. ‘W-What?’
‘I’ve just noticed, you sure like basket-’
Cy instantly put her hand to her brother’s mouth to shut him up. Kyle tried helplessly to remove his sister’s hand, but she was just too strong for him.
‘What’s wrong?’ he asked Cybil.
‘‘Nothing… nothing at all.’ she said, still her hand was on her brother’s mouth. ‘Mom, he still has a practice…’ she trailed off. She looked meaningfully at BJ, hoping against all hope, he’ll get what she meant.
‘Okay…’
‘I’ll send him off.’ she said, tugging BJ’s arm towards the door.
‘Nice to meet you Kate,’ he looked at the twins ‘See you soon, you two.’
Cybil dragged BJ to the hospital’s lobby. ‘What was that?! You shouldn’t appear whenever you like! You’re like a mushroom!’ she said irritatingly at him.
He snorted. ‘I saw the twins at the hospital’s car park, fighting, because they were lost. I just helped them find your mother’s room.’ He said simply. ‘I’m going now. I do have a practice today.’ He started to march towards the car park. ‘Oh…’ he turned his head to her. ‘Meet me at the mall, two hours from now. I’d like you to meet someone.’ He said then immediately walked away from Cybil. He didn’t even gave her time to asked and clarify the ‘someone’ he’d like her to meet.
‘YOU’RE LATE!’ BJ shouted.
‘I’m sorry okay.’ She said and touched her glasses. ‘I’m not good at directions.’ She sat down opposite to him. Her eyes twinkled upon seeing the salad on their table. ‘This looks good! I’m so… hungry!’ She started to dig in. She reached for her fork but BJ slapped her hand. ‘OUCH!’
‘Here she comes.’ BJ said while staring blankly ahead of her. ‘Look, the girl in purple dress, that’s Clarisse…’
Cybil followed his gaze. She saw a purple dress. She pushed her glasses up and looked intently at the girl’s face. The moment she saw her face, Cybil’s jaw dropped. ‘That’s Clarisse?!’ she asked.
‘She looks like Aphrodite. Man she’s a goddess!’
