My Man
What happens if the college geek meets an easy go lucky basketball super star with an attitude problem? Will she can handle him?
Chapter 1
‘Ah…’ she whined up and pushed her round wire-rim glasses. ‘How can you be such a hottie?’ she asked in front of the TV. She was watching college basketball tournament men’s division. Annually there was a competition that was played between the ten universities in her city. Among with many universities in their city only ten had met the standards of the said competition. There were a lot of sports played. From basketball, volleyball, badminton, football, baseball to softball and with different divisions from grades school until college. But the most famous of all competition was basketball. Every game their schools were played was broadcast live on national television. Now, she was watching the game live between her crush’s school and the school she was before. She wished she could see his games live. She had never been inside the coliseum where they were always playing. That could be fun. Besides she wanted to meet her crush on person.
‘Move your butt there, Cy.’ a sweet voice from the door said. ‘Will you do your?’ Her best friend Rae complains to her. ‘I know you just arrived from your seminar but still-’
She sighs audibly. ‘No one’s here. Rae,’ she said and teasingly she puts both of her hands under her chin and dreamingly looked at the TV. ‘He’s so cute Rae.’ she teased. She knew for sure her best friend will react to her comment. And she’s right.
‘Cybil Krizia Wilson?!’
Cy chuckled. ‘Okay… okay. I’m just kidding. But still Rae…’ She trailed off as Rae glared at her. Rae knew Cybil has a major crush on the guy but she still hadn’t said any comments.
‘You shouldn’t push yourself too hard Cy.’ Rae said. ‘You should be resting by now.’
Cybil smiled at her best friend. Rae hadn’t changed a bit! She was always looking after her, acting like her older sister. ‘Rae it’s okay. The seminar wasn’t that tough. We were just sitting there, listened to the speaker, that’s all.’ She reassured her. Oh how she missed her best friend so much. She was traveling for these past four weeks. She had attended some seminar and medical missions. ‘Can you please tell me again why I’m doing this alone?’
Rae chuckled. ‘For one thing you’re RC’s youth representative; it’s one of your duties.’ She said. ‘And I got issues with my family; they won’t allow me even though you’re with me.’
‘Yeah… sometimes I like to forget about that.’ She said honestly.
‘Have you heard from Kenneth?’ Rea asked. Kenneth is one of their close friends from high school. He was the team captain of their school’s basketball team.
‘Nope. Maybe they’re busy practicing. The new seasons just started and in Kenneth and Johan’s case they NEED to practice more.’ Cybil said. ‘That’s what they get from being the champion team last season.’ She mocked.
‘Yeah I guess so.’ Rae watched the game with her. After a while both girls were quiet. Cy noticed Rae was looking intently at her crush as if thinking of something. Suddenly Rae faced her then said. ‘Cy, what if that guy will court you? I mean what if he likes you and wanted you to be his girl? Are you willing?’
Whoa! I never saw that one coming. ‘Rae even though I have a major crush on that guy,’ she was pointing him, he was about to shot a free throw. ‘I’m realistic. It would never happen. And if it would,’ she instantly said before Rea can contradict her. ‘I don’t want to be his girl. I’m through with love and that type of person never knows what love is. Besides it’s just a crush. It’s not a big deal.’
Rae nods her head. ‘What time is our duty tomorrow?’ she asked her, changing their topic. Rea knew pretty well what Cy meant by what she said earlier.
‘Seven I think. I’m with Mom for the whole month. What’s your schedule?’
‘That’s my problem. Mom didn’t give me. I better go there early.’
‘That’s great Rae. I’ll be going there at six. I got to drop the twins.’ She informs her briefly.
It was already 6:15 am on her watch. Cy hurriedly entered the Red Cross building, five blocks away from her brother’s school. She has to prepare so many things that day so she can’t afford to be late. It was her first day to handle the trainings over the students assigned in Red Cross. As she entered the room she noticed that there was already one student in the lounge.
‘Good morning.’ she greeted him courteously with a smile and proceeded to looked for her schedule of activities. ‘What the…?’ she pushed her glasses and rechecked it again and again but her eyes were right. ‘How can this be?’ she seated far from the guy. Cy get her phone and dialed Rae’s number.
‘Hey, are you still sleeping?!’ Cy asked after Rae gave me a sleepy ‘hello’. ‘Rae we have a problem and we need to confirm something to Mom.’ she said to her and ignored the inquisitive look the guy was throwing her.
‘What problem?’
‘I got our schedule here and guess what, there are three different groups that were assign this month and not that all, two from our schools and one from the other.’
‘What?! Okay that’s weird. We’ll talk about that later okay?’
‘Okay just hurry up.’ She sighed and put back my phone inside my back.
‘Is there something wrong?’ the guy asked Cy.
‘Not-’ she turned to answer. Oh my God! Is this for real? She silently asked herself. The guy who she greeted a while ago and was now seated far from her was the same guy Rae and her talked about yesterday. It was the basketball superstar Brent Justine Reynolds! He was looking at her closely. He was still wearing their school’s jacket; beneath it Cybil saw a blue jersey with its school seal. Just finished practicing probably, Cybil silently said. She blinked and then it hit her. This guy was asking her something. She tried her best to remember his question. ‘Nothing is just- were you assigned here?’
He smiled at her. ‘Yes I’ am.’
‘And you’re a management student right?’ Cybil asked him, looking straight at those beautiful hazel eyes, with long lashes and perfectly curved eye brows.
‘Yes’ he said still looking at her intently.
Her brows were pulled at the center. She looked away and thought about the schedule the head of the Red Cross gave her. There were three groups. Two came from our school as expected but one came from a private and sectarian school, probably management students. How on earth can I handle them if they will be assigned to me? She pondered silently.
‘Were you assigned here too?’ he asked Cybil curiously he was checking her out.
Still on her thoughts she answered. ‘Yes.’ Then all of the sudden she realized what she’d been talking. ‘No. I mean sort of.’
He was still looking at her as if he was amazed from her answer or something.
‘Are you the only one major’s management in your group?’
‘No. Our group composed almost by management students. There are three or four accountancy majors though.’ He said smiling charmingly at her. Two cute circles were formed in his cheeks. ‘Why are you asking?’
‘I… uhm…’ she lost track of their conversation because of his smile. ‘I’m-’
‘Hi Miss Krizia. How are?’ a teacher from her school and department greeted her happily.
She pushed her glasses. ‘Hi Miss. I’m fine.’ Cy gaily said. Cy noticed her assessed thoroughly the ‘air’ between Cybil and Brent. She stood up. ‘I think I’ll look for Mom- I mean Ma’am Rachel, Miss. I’ll check our schedule for this month.’ She excused herself to them.
She immediately marched towards the office of the head. ‘Good morning Mom.’ She greeted the RC’s head. Rea and Cybil called Miss Rachel ‘Mom’ because the head was like their own mother, she scold them if necessary, gave them advises and she also treated them like her own child. Being the youngest among the volunteers in the RC, Cy can’t help wonder why she treated them such way.
She smiled at her. ‘Good morning to you Cy. Where’s Rae?’
‘Late again. Mom, the schedule really bugs me.’ she started.
‘Let’s wait for Rae to arrive-’
‘I’m here.’ Rae said at them smiling amusedly at their Mom’s surprised reaction.
‘Okay, please sit down girls.’ She said as she pointed the chairs in font of her desk. They both silently followed her order. ‘I received an order last week. It mandated to all Universities and Colleges here in the city that ALL students must undergo a proper training about Basic Life Support. All students from different departments will undergo a one month training with us. The other schools approved the order so we have no choice. They started sending us their senior management and some accountancy major. For those students into medical field they still train for BLS. It’s optional for them to have training in ADVANCE Life support, which includes medications and some machines.’ She paused as if to give the the drama. they knew her pretty well, so Rea and Cybil cast an I-know-she-will-do-that looked at each other.
Mom stood up and moved towards her table, took two mugs and poured something on it. She handed Rae a hot coffee while she handed Cybil milk. She knew pretty well that caffeine gave Cy palpitations. Cybil started drinking the hot liquid while Ms. Rachel continued. ‘This month surprisingly, there were only three groups assign here. Two came from your school composes of a sophomores and juniors and the last is from the other school compose of seniors. Rae, I’ll be assigning you to handle the community so your group will be the sophomores. The community will last two weeks just like before Rae, but this time they'll not train for the Basic Life Support. So your activities will plainly concern about the community. The last two groups will be having their training, so we need your help here.’
‘Got it Mom.’ She said smiling happily at her. Rae loved the community as much as Cybil loved it too. There they can encounter different people with really different walks of life from them, way different. There they saw people struggling just to have a meal or earned a living. But the best part of being assigned in the community was they can able to help them with their concerns and all. As a health care provider they can impart knowledge to the community that concerns their health.
‘Cy…’
Please assign me to handle the juniors… please let it be the juniors…
‘I’ll assign you to handle the…’ Ms. Rachel looked at Cybil. ‘Seniors…’ She said.
‘But- can I instead handle the juniors? We have the same course so we can relate on each other. Besides Mom, how on earth do you expect me to approach a management and accountancy majors if they don’t have any idea about the machines we are using?’
‘That’s why you have to teach them and Cy, this is a BASIC Life Support training not an ADVANCE Life Support so we are not teaching them to use a defibrillator and other that relates to ALS. Besides I’ll personally handle the junior’s group. I have an impression that student nurses from your school have excellent skills.’ She throws them a knowing look.
‘But-’
‘Is there something wrong with your assign load Cybil?’ she asked her seriously.
Cy looked down and reached up to straighten her glasses. ‘No Ma’am.’ She said in a whisper. Cybil didn’t know exactly why but it gave her the creeps every time Ms. Rachel changed her tone that way.
‘That’s good. We have our orientation for this day. Rae orient your group to the community setting, I think it is their first time. There will be a school bus so you need not to worry about your transportation. And for you Cy, orient them about their up coming training and about the RC, our rules and regulations here. The others are preparing for an actual demo for proper ambulation, first aid and bandaging YOU will perform the CPR.’
‘What?!’ I didn’t saw that one coming! She sighed helplessly. This is great! She was assign to supervised the group of her crush for their training ALONE and on top of that, she’ll perform a quick demo on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in front of HIM, THEM. This is really my day…
