My Four Senses - Chapter 2

When a bird meets the end of fire (translation: when sparrow meets ash) ...
I could almost hear the girl roll her eyes. "Look here," she started, but was interrupted when the bell signaling the end of class rang. She muttered some random insult, and stomped away. I smiled faintly to myself.

Saved by the bell.

I reached into my desk to pull out my books and pencil case. I gathered them together and slowly exited the room. As soon as I had reached the door, someone grabbed my hand. I jerked away reflexively, and Mrs. Kajin gushed out an immediate apology. "Oh, my God, I am so dreadfully sorry! Of course you won't like to be grabbed by someone you barely know. I do apologize..." she rambled on and on.

I tried to interrupt as politely as possible. "Mrs. Kajin, it's alright... It's just that I'm not familiar with you yet. I just over-reacted a bit. Now I really need to get to class, so I shou-," then I was interrupted.

"And that is why I'm here!" she exclaimed. "This is a completely new school to you, and you are unfamiliar with its positions, so I have arranged a guide for you!" she proudly announced.

I tensed. I didn't really like it when unnecessary people knew my disability. Although sometimes it was kinda obvious. Anyhow, at this school, no one but the teachers knew about it, and I wanted to keep it that way. "Er, Mrs. K, I think I might be fine on my own, if that's alright... After all, I have the support of the staff..!" I tried to persuade her, but I didn't know how far I could push with someone like her.

"Nonsense!" she pressed. I detected a bit of impatience behind her tone. Great, now I was the annoying one? "Your new guide is Ash Mavins. He's one of our most involved students, so he should be giving you a great tour, and he's in all the same classes as you! Isn't that right, Ash?"

A guy's voice broke through my thoughts of horror. "That's right. Mrs. K, I think I can take it from here. With all of your hard work at the office, this is the least I can do for you. Sparrow and I will be fine!" Ash said in smooth tones. I grimaced slightly. He sounded like one of the doctor's on General Hospital. I mean, not that I would know.

Mrs. Kajin squealed appreciatively, and tapped away. And there I was, left with some strange guy that was probably staring at me right now. Either that or wanting to run away. I waited awkwardly for him to say something, and then he did. "Aren't you going to shake my hand? I've been holding it up for about 2 minutes now. Or is it that you're shy to be around a guy of my great beauty?" his tone was pure unfriendliness and gloating.

Wait, had he just said great beauty? Was he mocking me, or did he really not know I was blind? Hmmm, maybe this would work out. I half-heartedly held my hand out. I wondered what his hand would feel like.

His hand touched mine for half a second with two fingers. It was fleeting but it was the first time I had almost willingly touched hands with someone, so it was lasting.

ASH POV

Great. I have one of the world's busiest lives, and now I'm stuck showing some nerdy new girl around the school. Plus, she doesn't even know how to shake hands. Very impolite.

"'Kay, let's get going. I need to show you the whole school in less than 15 minutes," I told her hurriedly.

"Why?" she asked, tilting her head. Wow, not only is she nerdy and doesn't know how to shake hands, but she doesn't even make eye contact.

I sighed and rolled my eyes impatiently. "Why? Because I'm a very busy person and I have a very hard life, unlike you, Ms. Gilde," I hissed furiously. She had this weird look in her eyes that made me feel kind of uncomfortable. What a freak.

She smiled faintly. "Guess you do, huh?" she said softly. "Alright, so what's first? Cafeteria? Auditorium? Lab? I thought you needed to hurry," she said in a teasing tone.

Now she was pissing me off. This girl definitely did not know what was right and wrong in this school, yet. And she definitely did not know that I was Ash Mavins, 'most wanted guy to date in 10th year.' I glared at her and rushed away, thinking she would follow. However, when I looked back, she was standing in the same spot, with the same blank look on her face.

I shook my head angrily. Did she think she was some kind of princess or something? Needing to be asked everywhere? I stomped over to her, grabbed her hand, and with a, "COME ON," pulled her away, past the girls washroom.

At that moment, I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to watch over Sparrow Gilde, with me being her guide.
