Chapter 1
Bailey's P.O.V.
"Did I loose them?" I asked myself. I turned around and looked into the dark alley behind me. "Where did she go?!" I could hear the muffled voices of the confused thugs.
Have they gone yet? I hid behind a dumpster with tears streaming down my face. This wasn't supposed to happen. My parents had always warned me never to take the alleyway when I walked home by myself. The only reason that I took it was that I had detention for the first time, and I needed to get home quickly so I could finish my homework. Before I knew it, thugs had ganged up on me, and I ran. I ran so fast and so hard, that I wasn't even sure where I was going. All I knew was that I had to go away from the thugs.
Then, I heard footsteps, and they were getting closer. Before I had time to react, someone came and cupped his or her hand on my mouth.
"Don't worry, I'm getting you out of here." Definitely a he.
I nodded with tears still in my eyes. He grabbed my hand and led me down another dark alley.
In the dim street light, I could only make out a few of his features. He was tall and skinny, with brown hair and dark green eyes.
I feel like I've seen him somewhere, but I just can't remember where.
He paused for a moment. "Do you trust me?" he asked. I wasn't sure how to react.
"Yes," I said absently. With my hand still in his, we ran down the alley even faster than ever. I heard the voices of the thugs who were chasing me, and it seemed that they were getting close.
Then, he led me into a dead end. A panicked look appeared on both of our faces as we heard the voices of the thugs getting closer. He searched around frantically and spotted a fire escape.
"Here, I'll give you a boost. Keep on going, and don't wait for me," he said. I nodded with tears still in my eyes. It was already dark, and to make matters worse, I had no idea where I was.
He boosted me onto the fire escape and right as I was going to start climbing the ladder to the next story up, the thugs came.
"Hey, where'd that girl go?" one thug asked. He was short and fat, and seemed to be out of breath. He was also carrying a crowbar. Another thug came around the corner holding a gun looking very scary and muscular. There were other thugs following behind him, so I assumed that he was the thug leader. "What do you mean 'where'd she go?' She didn't just disappear into thin air!'"
Then, they spotted him. "Hey, you, did you happen to see a girl about yay high?" the thug leader asked, indicating my height with his hand. The boy remained silent. "No? Well, liar, then why did I see you running 'round with her, huh?" Still no answer. The thug leader growled and lunged at him, managing to hold the gun against his head.
"Now, I'm gonna ask you one more time. Where. Is. The. Girl?" the thug leader asked. "She's gone. By the time you get to the place where she was, she'll be miles away by now," he said. "LIAR!" the thug leader shouted viscously at him.
Right when the thug was about to pull the trigger, I shouted "Wait! Don't shoot!"
Everyone looked up at me. "Run," he mouthed to me.
I was completely frozen. I had no idea what to do. "Well, there's our pretty lady. Come down so we can escort you home," said the thug leader. An chorus of laughter erupted behind him.
While all the thugs were trying to get me to come down, the boy thought fast. He grabbed the gun and tossed it up the fire escape several floors higher.
Now the thugs were really mad.
"You little rat!" the thug leader yelled and lunged for him. While all the thugs were beating up this boy that had tried to save me, I felt terrible that all I could do was stay up on the fire escape, out of harm's way. Then I realized I had my cell phone in my pocket.
"Um, 9-1-1, I'm being held captive in an alleyway." All the thugs froze. I looked down and saw the boy with blood trickling down his cheek, and bruises on his arms.
"I'm not sure where I am, because they kidnapped me, but you can track my call right?" I didn't really call 9-1-1, but I sure had the thugs believing that I did. I waited a few seconds before I spoke again, so it looked as if I were listening to someone on the phone. "Okay," I said, "I'll stay here and do what they say. You'll come as soon as possible right?" Pause. "Oh, you're already on your way? Thank goodness!" Pause. "Thank you."
"Did you really call the police?" asked the leader. "Yes, they're on the way right now. They told me to look like I hung up the phone, but actually, they're still on the line listing to everything you say," I said trying to keep my voice even. I hope it was convincing because there were still tears in my eyes as I spoke. "Damn it," grunted the leader. "We better get out of here." Just like that, all the thugs ran down the alleyway and disappeared as if they had rehearsed this many times.
