Mr, Spare A Dime

A strange little tale.
An orphan boy was standing on the corner of the street,
The clothes he wore were ragged, busted shoes upon his feet,
He held his hand out to me and said, "Mr, spare a dime,
I need to buy some medicine for a dear friend of mine."

I gave the boy two dollars and I sent him on his way,
He looked at me through the saddest eyes that I ever did see,
I swear I saw those eyes well up and a lump form in his throat,
And I felt a chill of winter wind inside my overcoat.

The boy, he turned and scampered along the avenue,
Followed by a shadow of deepest, darkest blue,
And just before he disappeared into the setting sun,
I chose that I should follow him, to see where he had gone.

The boy, he turned a corner about fifty yards ahead,
But when I reached the junction, I knew not where he went,
I looked all around me but he was nowhere to be seen,
It seems thin air had taken him into the land of dreams.

Alone with my enigma, as a witness to the weird,
I pondered with a troubled mind of what had happened here,
How could the boy have vanished when no doors or passageways,
Could aid his disappearance, to vanish from this place?

Then all at once I heard a cry, a whimper in the dark,
And I came across an old man trying to nurse a broken heart,
I put myself down on one knee to whisper in his ear,
And asked him what could hurt him so, to shed so many tears.

He reached out with scrawny fingers and beckoned me come near,
Looked up at me with gloomy eyes, pooled with deepest fear,
He asked if I had seen his son, who'd left him long ago,
He'd sent him out for medicine because he was feeling poor.

I shed tears of my own then, I couldn't help myself,
I felt the pain and misery the old man must have felt,
Then I watched him evaporate into the darkest shadow,
He left me with a broken heart, that I may feel his sorrow.

So Mr, can you spare a dime so I can buy some booze,
I use it as a medicine to chase away my blues,
And if you'd like to follow me, I'll show you where I've been,
Then you can watch me disappear and take away my sin.
