MP3 Technology: Advantages and Disadvantages
In the Internet age, MP3 became a de facto standard for digital audio files. With the popular peer-to-peer application Napster, music lovers could exchange MP3 files so that they could get songs without paying for them. This article has been written to enlist the MP3 advantages and MP3 disadvantages, so as to help you decide if you want to convert your existing music files which are in some other format to MP3 or not.

Advantages of MP3

The advantage of MP3 is its high fidelity. The quality of an MP3 file is determined by its bit rate. The bit rate is measured in kilobits per second. The bit rate of an MP3 file can range from 8kbps to 320kbps. You should keep your songs at 160kbps if you don't like them very much and don't put them at the start of your MP3 players list. Keep your songs at 192kbps if you like them a little bit. Use 256kbps for songs that you love. And use 320kbps for your favorite songs of all times. Anyway, even an MP3 at 320kbps does not sound as good as the WAV file version of the song. But an MP3 at 320kbps takes four times less space than a file in WAV format. To use an analogy, an MP3 file is to a WAV file, what a JPEG image is to a BMP image.

The second advantage of MP3 is that it can be played by many types of devices such as CD players and Apple iPods. You can also play MP3 files with media players such as Winamp, Windows Media Player or QuickTime. The third advantage of MP3 is ID3 tags. The ID3 tag of an MP3 file stores the artist name, the song title, the year and the genre. You can also create your own playlists.

Another benefit of MP3 is that encoding is easy. It is simple to rip CD audio, and just as simple to burn MP3s as custom CD-Rs. The encoding speed is also very fast, but it also depends on the CD drive speed. It takes very little time to produce MP3s. You can use lossless audio compression if you have a lot of free disk space, and lossy audio compression if you have little free disk space. MP3 encoders such as LAME are free and open-source, so everyone can contribute to their development.

Another plus point of MP3 is that distribution is simple. MP3s can be downloaded through HTTP or FTP sites. You can also distribute MP3s through portable storage devices such as USB flash drives. You can also purchase MP3s from online music stores such as iTunes and eMusic.

You can also use a server to stream MP3s. The MP3 stream uses a playlist format such as M3U (which stands for MP3 URL) or PLS. MP3 streaming is also used by Internet radio stations. You can embed MP3 streams with the help of a Flash player. You can have different rates for dial-up and broadband connections. The MP3 audio is not saved to your hard drive.

Problems with MP3

A disadvantage of MP3 is that it takes up quite a lot of storage space. Since an MP3 files usually takes up 5 megabytes (MB) of disk space, the number of MP3s you can store is limited. Also, the relatively large size of an MP3 file makes the downloading of the file slow, if you have a sluggish Internet connection.

Another problem with MP3 is that the song may skip at random places. This occurs especially if you have a slow computer and are simultaneously using several programs that are hogging the processor. Another drawback of MP3 is that it is not technically free. You will also need an MP3 decoder if you want to convert audio from MP3 format to WAV format. Another shortcoming is that the MP3 format has very little security available. For example, people who used the MP3 file-sharing service Morpheus had their computers accessed by hackers.

Another limitation is that MP3 is not the highest fidelity format for audio files. Other audio formats, such as Ogg Vorbis and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), are superior to MP3 in terms of quality. AAC is the format used in Apple iTunes player. However, MP3 is still the most popular audio format in the world.

The MP3 advantages and MP3 disadvantages, that I have listed, will help you make a proper decision before you go for music download, next time.
