Mount Shivlinga

Successful Expedition on 9th June 2007
Mount Shivlinga in the Gharwal region of Himalaya is considered as a "Dream Mountain". A team of nine members from Giripremi Club, Pune (India) completed the mission of capturing successfully on 9th June 2007.

It was great achievement as they are the 1st civilian team to summit this mountain. The key behind their success must be pure adventurous passion. They wanted neither fame, status nor wealth but more joy of achievement and that too something which was considered impossible !

Mount Shivling is very different as compared to other mountains. No doubt "Everest" is the toppest in the World but the challenges of Shivlinga are different and difficult. This mountain always attracted to trekkers.

The height is 6543 mtr. (22,000 feet). The mountain is popular in trekkers because it’s uncommon shape. From one side it looks like "Lord Ganesha" and from another side it looks like "Pind" of Lord Shiva that is the reason it is named as Mount Shivling.

The trekkers had to pass through herculean task because of its unusual geographical conditions such as heavy snowfall, avalanches, low air in the highest area, 5000 feet narrow road, 90 0 straight climbing, 300 feet ice wall, at last stage narrow space for tents, unstable weather conditions and other natural calamities.

But the team members of Giripremi Club had enough courage and experience to face this and make the expedition successful !

Mount Shivlinga has great history. It has in all ten routes for climbing. The first attempt was made by ITBP, which was led by Hukum Singh on 3rd June 1974. The team members were Hukum Singh, Ang Tharkey, Pemba Tharkey, Laxman Singh, Dorjee and Pasang Sherpa. They chose West Ridge route at Shivlinga.

In 1983 the Indian Army became successful in ascending this peak but another civilian group was unsuccessful. Many civilian trekkers had to sacrifice their lives.

At 2.20 a.m. on 9th June 2007 turned out to be the "Golden Day" in the history of mountaineers. It is an International Record.

Many many hats to the team members comprising the Leader Rahul Yelange, Dy Leader – Avinash Kandekar, TEkraj Adhikari, Anand Mali, Anand Pathare, Rupesh Khopade, Mahesh Kalbhor, Nilesh Aware, Ajit Tate, Yashdeep Malwade and two sherpas.

The expedition was successfully organized by Club – Secretary Mr. Umesh Zirpe.
