Motion Sickness in Kids

If your kids suffer from motion sickness, it can really impact on a relaxing getaway or vacation. Check out our tips and advice to combat this problem.
Before you can even begin to work out how you can fix your kids motion sickness you need to understand it. So the first thing we need to consider is this:

What is Motion Sickness?:

The technical interpretation is a condition in which there is a disagreement between ones visual and perceived movement.

However in basic language, it means what your body is feeling or sensing is different to what your eyes see.

Some of the symptoms your kids maybe experiencing are dizziness, fatigue or nausea just to name a few of the symptoms.

There are many ways we can look at motion or travel sickness, from medications, to natural approaches to simply making changes to our environment.

Here are some ideas:

Try to ensure your kids can see out the window, so if they are a bit little to see out they may need a booster chair of some sort. Plus if you have sunshades on your window you may decide to remove them also. Obviously this will depend on the time of the year and what impact this will have on the kids. They may be more likely to get upset from sun in their eyes. Therefore it is completely up to the individual to weigh up the pros and cons of each choice.

Try and distract them. You can get some fantastic free printables on the net these days which act as a cheap way to entertain the kids. Why not put together a little action pack to keep them amused. Some free colouring pages and activity sheets will be sure to keep them entertained and distract them from the bigger picture.

If you can afford to, portable computer games such as Nintendo DS or Leapster (by Leapfrog) can act as another great distraction.

When planning to travel, leave after your family has had something solid to eat. Also ensure you have healthy snacks to munch on along the way. This will help to settle their tummies as well as act as another distraction.

Whilst all of these tips are great ideas, they won’t solve the problem for everyone.:

You can purchase medication that can be taken prior to travel. This may be something you need to consider for your child. Sometimes it will just create peace of mind if nothing else and reduce anxiety. However, most parents are now moving toward managing health issues naturally.

If medicating your children is not your idea of a good thing, a natural alternative is the travel bracelets you can purchase. The idea behind these is that they push on pressure points relieving the sickness.

Unfortunately there will still be the odd kid here and there that will not improve regardless of what you do. Hopefully that will not be the case for your family.:

Go prepared for the trip and try and get to your vacation destination with as little stress as possible.
