Moth balls are balls of chemical pesticides, made up of naphthalene which are good for killing insects which destroys our clothes or things and also for keepings pests away because of the smell that these moth balls give out. Since the naphthalene in highly flammable, nowadays these balls are made up of paradichlorobenzene instead. These balls are toxic and if the fumes that are released by them, are inhaled in excess, then it can cause several health related problems like nausea, diarrhea, presence of blood in the urine, jaundice and sometimes the toxic fumes might also kill the red blood cells in our body. Nasal cancer is another result of inhaling a large amount of mothball fumes. But irrespective of these disadvantages, there are several uses. As long as you take certain precautionary steps (which have been discussed later), you will not be harmed by these balls. Here are the various uses of moth balls.
Important Uses
Moth balls have several uses around the house. If you know how to use mothballs around the house, then you can make good use of them. Let us see what are different uses for mothballs.
- During the summers, when you do not need the warm woolens, or during the winters, when you do not need the light cotton clothes, you have to store them away till you can use them later. Wash these clothes properly and then put them away in the cupboard, but first put in some mothballs in there in order to keep the moths and other fabric eating insects away.
- Are the moles and squirrels and rabbits coming and spoiling your well kept lawn? Are the rabbits chewing away on your favorite rose plant? Then just place some moth balls on the soil, or near the flower beds and your problem will be solved. No, these balls will not kill these animals, but it's smell will only keep them away. You can also place them near your vegetable garden in order to keep the pesky insects away from them or just crush some mothballs and scatter them in the flower pots in order to save them from the insects. Do not forget to replace these mothballs frequently as the moisture from the soil, the rain etc, will dissolve them fast.
- Bats...brrrr! In the attic? No problem, just place some mothballs in there and that will the last time a bat will enter your attic. Snakes and other reptiles can also be kept away from your home if you with these mothballs. Just put some around your house and the smell will keep away.
- You can also protect your silverwares that you have to store away, from rusting with the help of some mothballs. When you put them away in a bag, just add a ball or two and that will be enough to keep them shiny.
- While storing away some things in a box, you can place some mothballs there in order to protect them from silverfish.
- Here are some other mothballs uses. While vacuuming, add some mothballs in the vacuum bag and that will kill fleas or insects that are sucked in. Secondly the smell given out by a dead animal, is enough to make anyone feel sick. Just place some mothballs in the house and it's smell will balance the rotten smell coming from outside as these balls are good deodorizers.
Now that you have several mothballs uses, there are certain precautionary steps that you need to keep in mind.
- Keep these mothballs away from children and pets. If you have either of these or both at home, then better store these in a netted bag or small box.
- Before using the clothes that had been stored away with the moth balls, make sure that you wash them properly.
- True they help get rid of bad smells but that's no reason why you should use them as air fresheners. Inhaling these toxic fumes will harm your health.
