Morphed

Alexis is a typical teenager that has moved to a new location with her mum. It seems to be going fine but as she has dreams and visions of unusual happenings she starts to question if she a normal kid at all.
Movies, books and comics… they all put it as fiction, but this is real. Know one believes it. I don’t even believe it. What am I suppose to believe? Am I an alien? Do I have a disease? Well I guess I’ll know in a moment. Here I am in a box being treated like an animal to who knows where. Who are these people? Why can’t they just leave me be, I haven’t done anything bad to them. I hope my family’s safe and my friends and Jack. Oh this isn’t the time to get all love torn. Maybe I should go through what happened before all of this to get my mind off all of it. What, am I stupid? That’ll make me feel worse, but I can’t stop it. They’re making me think this. They want me to rethink everything that’s happened. No! I won’t let them.

A light was flashing out of place on the side of the road. It made me uncomfortable, everything here did. Every time I walked past people they would all stare as if they knew my secret. I wanted to go back home and greet everyone I knew, even Casey. I wanted to hug mum rap my arms around her and say everything was all right. But it wasn’t, I couldn’t stop moving now. This experience, I guess it was like a war. You hear the soldiers that had survived from the war explain how they watched their friends die and had to kill their own kind, but now it was all much clearer to how much agony that would have felt. Not fully, but much clearer.

A group of men started walking down the narrow street. Coming back to my senses, I remembered I needed to keep a low profile so I quickly shifted to another route down an alleyway. It was dark and dirty, but I kept on moving casually. Full garbage bags with rats filled the street and two buildings towering any light out of the pathway. I outspread my arms trying to find a way but the stench and disgusting walls overcame my senses. I closed my eyes and focused. The darkness suddenly became to light and my eyes turned golden. Suddenly as I opened my eyes to see a clearer world two hands grabbed onto my body.
"Oh! Look at this one Matty! Hello sweetie. Ya know, you shouldn’t be on the streets by yourself. What should we do with her Matty"?
"Maybe we should take her home ey?"
Angry and scared I yelled, "Let me go".
My throat became dry and my heart beat furiously.
"I’m afraid we can’t do that Hun".
I clenched one of the men’s arm, "Please, let me go!" With adrenaline flowing through me I tried my known power, the one that had ruined my life. I didn’t want to but I had no choice. I had to use my worst fear. I felt my head grow longer and bigger. My hands let go of his arm and grew longer, thicker and started growing patterned fur. Teeth outgrew my human teeth reaching out of my mouth with whiskers following. My body fell to the ground and a tail followed. I shifted my lips above my teeth and made a threatening growl that echoed throughout my body.
"What the hell is that"?
On my four legs I growled at them close to the ground and ready to pounce. One man ran, tripping over objects in the alley but the other stood paralyzed. I slowly moved closer giving warning gestures. I saw the fear in his eyes and I could feel his heart racing. I had seen it all too often and I backed down. He gave a small scream and followed his friend.
I stood silent for a while feeling strange. I turned around hoping to not find any more trouble, but I was suddenly strapped back.

"Argh!"
"She’s having side effects sir…"
I was back in the box like room where I was before. This time two men where standing around me with lab coats on. Utensils where hanging around me, all of different shapes. There were blades and saw looking handles and I just realized I was in some sort of chair. A metal band rapped around my head, leather straps around my wrists and ankles and every bit of my body pinned down. They obviously didn’t want me to move anywhere.
"Should we try the solution on her sir?"
I became tense and clenched my fists but I couldn’t transform. I was sure they wanted me to.
"Yes, hopefully this time it’ll work".
As I managed to turn my head to see it a needle approached me with blue ooze inside. I squirmed to get free but I felt the needle dig into my arm. I screamed in pain from the man jagging it like a knife into me. They made me have another flash back. This time it was way back to where it all started.

"Al, can you help me unload the car?"
I walked around the house touching the corners of the rooms. It was a beautiful house with beams of light streaming through every window. I ran up the stairs and there were three rooms. Almost like an automatic thing I chose which bedroom would be mine.
"Alexis, please, come down here?"
Suddenly realized that I was ignoring her I came down stairs and helped her with the luggage. Boxes by boxes filled the living room and in the end we had to place some in the kitchen. It was pretty crowded and we had to leap over each pile. After two hours of taking the essential things out like bedding and food we lay on the couch.
Mum huffed, "Thanks for that".
I smiled and opened the new, shiny fridge. There wasn’t very much food.
"You know I think we should make a cake for a celebration", I said.
"Great idea, how about banana cake?"
I nodded but frowned, "We don’t have any egg or butter". She looked up with that purpose sad face and I replied, "Fine, give me ten dollars", and we laughed.
"Be careful".
The store was only around a couple of streets so I was happy to do it, besides, I might see some students from my new school. It was a nice town here. It wasn’t too big like a city but it wasn’t a place separated from the outside world. The houses were small with big, beautiful gardens. There weren’t even any brown patches of grass. All of it was wonderful. I saw the big sign over the hill ‘Store’.
"How modern", I muttered to myself.
I had my hands in my jean pockets and head low trying not to make too much attention to when I walked in the store. You had that kind of feeling when you were new somewhere, thinking that everyone was always looking at you. It wasn’t a huge store, just two stores combined. I walked through the sliding doors to find only a few people. An old lady with a straw bag, a lady with a baby in a pram and a boy of around my age. Relieved, I became less tense and excavated for eggs and butter. It took me quite a while but I held the eggs in my hand and saw the butter at the top of a freezer. A bit worried that I couldn’t reach I turned to the counter person about to ask whether he could get it but he was rather short, he didn’t look very awake either. I cringed and in attempt, I opened the freezer door, rose on my toes and outstretched my arm.
Just an inch away, darn!
Out of nowhere the boy appeared behind me, "Here, let me", and he smiled.
I felt embarrassed and I started blushing. One of the rules with appearance, don’t blush! He had brown hair and was taller than me and if it’s alright to say, quite handsome.
He got the butter and handed it to me, "Are you new here?"
Still a little bit shaky I managed to answer calmly, "Um yes, just moved in today actually".
He laughed, "Mmm, kind of shows".
I felt even worse, but I kept on smiling. There was some sort of thing about him that made me smile.
"So what school are you going too?"
"Umm, oh what’s the name, Cantabrew State High".
"Oh, great! I go there; I’m guessing you’re in grade 9?"
"Yup, class 9B".
"How about that", he replied.
The man at the counter finally woke up, "Hey you two! Stop flirting with each other and close that freezer door!"
I laughed, "Well thank-you. I guess I’ll see you in school then".
He waved, "Oh, didn’t catch your name?"
"Alexis. You can call me Alex", I replied
"Sweet, I’m Jack".
Still smiling I went to the counter and bought the things. He gave me my change and I walked off.
"I meet a guy by not being able to reach butter", I laughed to myself.
"Thanks sweetie", mum said as I walked into the door, "now, let’s bake".
I rolled my eyes.

Still slightly drowsy from waking up early I looked at my uniform. It wasn’t something that you’d wear to the cinemas with your friends, but it wasn’t too bad. There was a white t-shirt with a small, green, checker tie, a skirt going down to my knees that was the same colour as the tie and normal black shoes. I got dressed, brushed my half blonde half brown hair and tied it up. I remembered the discussion last year when I got blonde streaks with my mum. She was saying that it looked ridiculous and in the desperation for me not to get it she said I would become dumb. Of course I didn’t take her advice. I met her in the kitchen.
"Oh mum, since when did you do me pancakes before school?" I laughed.
She started pouring the mixture onto the pan, "It’s you’re first day, I want you to do your best", she smiled.
After we ate she did the usual mother check, "have you got your phone, purse, my mobile number?"
"Yes, yes", and we ran off to the car with my bag and hat.
It was quite a small car, with really only enough room for four people but I liked it. It was like a characteristic to our family.
The journey only took ten minutes, but I was sure it felt like an hour. I was told constantly by mum that I would be alright and I would make heaps of friends, but I still got worried. There was that gut feeling that I all alone. We finally made it. There were groups of girls at the front greeting each other and screaming with delight. The guys were casually doing handshakes and things girls just don’t understand like pretending to make a fight. I knew every school was like this though. Nothing could be perfect.
Mum helped me out and got my luggage, "Now sweetie just be yourself and you’ll be fine making friends".
I hugged her and waved goodbye. Still a little bit nervous I did the same as at the store, keeping my head down and staying close to my bag. I walked into the archway type entrance and weaved my way through all the crowds of people to the middle area.
I suddenly found Jack and went to him, "Hey!"
He turned around in surprise and replied, "Oh hey , meet my friends", he pointed to the four other boys around him.
Just as Jack was about to talk, a girl came up to us and stood very close to him, "Hi Jack, I’ve missed you".
"Oh Alex, this is Casey. She’s in our class as well", he said awkwardly.
I had a flutter of happiness as he remembered my name let alone my nickname. I observed her quickly with her foundation, eyeliner and curly hair. I knew I couldn’t judge so quickly but this person made me click, I knew there would be a war sometime soon.
A bell rang and people started moving to class.
"Would you like me to show you too class, Alex?"
I smiled and nodded.
"Well nice seeing you, Alex", and she blew a kiss to Jack. Just as he turned to escort me she glared at me jealously. Maybe I was right.
I walked next to Jack and he pointed around to the buildings including the library and other classrooms. Finally as the second bell rang we ran to class. Everyone was already set down in their chairs in rows with a female teacher saying a few notices. Jack knocked on the door.
"Come in", she said and I walked in quietly behind him with my books in one hand. "So, why are you two late on your first day?"
Jack looked uncomfortable, "Well, Miss Anderson, Alexis is new here so I showed her around the school for a bit".
She frowned, "OK, you get off it this time", she turned to me, "Sorry Alexis, this got off to a bad start. Welcome to the school, if you have any troubles you can come to me or any staff".
"She says that to every new person, never to an old one", I heard a boy whisper at the back of the room to his friend.
"That’s enough Sam", she answered, "You can sit down over there in the corner", she said to me.
As soon as the teacher turned her back and started writing notices on the board the girl sitting next to me leaned over, "Hi Al, my names Sarah".
She had nice straight, brown hair and a dazzling smile. Those types of people always made me smile because it just made me feel warm.
"Hi there", I replied but quickly dimmed as the teacher turned her back to look.
"So, are you new in town?" she said still having that warm smile.
"Yeah, moved in here the other day. It’s quite a nice place".
"Mmm".
Then as the teacher started handing out sheets she then whispered, "Want to sit with me for morning tea?"
I gleamed with happiness, "Sure… well, thank you", and we giggled, "I guess I’m just a bit nervous".
"Don’t worry, yes this town is a bit different but it gets much better".
