More Than One Footprint In The Cyberworld

An explanation as to why some people have more than one website or blog.
I’ve been asked before ‘why do you have more than one website. You’ve already got www.MarshaMaung.com, don’t you? Isn’t that enough? How many is enough? Are you brokering or selling domain names or what?’

And I just laugh.

Not at my friends’ lack of knowledge but the fact that I have considered brokering and buying-selling domain names before. It used to be a big thing and I heard great things about how some people made off with insane amounts of money for the deals that they managed to close. Well, they ended up having to sell off others for very little money but never was there a time that they made a loss. So, all in all, you can say that buying and selling of domains is a ‘profitable’ business.

The right exposure to the right people
But the reason why some people own more than one domain name, have more than one hosting account, have more than one blog or update more than one website is this….more exposure to the right people.

I would like to pin the blame down to Google for placing so much emphasis on having the right domain name. If you were in the handbags business, in order to rank well for the keyword ‘handbag’, it’s better for you to have a domain name like TopLadiesHandbag dot com or CoolHandbags dot com. You have an advantage over others who might have cooler names like EvanBrookes who sells really top class handbags…which isn’t quite unfair, if you think about it.

Insights on different things
Anyway, the first reason why I have different websites is that each of them is designed and written for different groups of people. Some people might like my insights on freelance writing while some others might be more interested in what I have to say from the perspective of being a mother, work at home person or….a person per se.

No lumping around, please
And it’s a big mistake to lump everything you have into one website. It’s hard, unless you’ve made a name for yourself as a portal, to establish a website’s brand and inclination when you have everything about boat-making and cancer-fighting within the same website. It’s not impossible but it just confuses the readers a little bit.

Each business and website has its own strategy and marketing agenda so you can’t use the same strategy for two completely different types of business or websites. Hence, while I have one website targeted towards small business owners, the other is created to attract bigger clients and brands.

Less confusing for the readers and site visitors
Finally, I have more than one website because it’s less confusing for the readers. AllMomStuff speaks for itself while KidsRuleTheWorld also speaks of selling products or services related to kids. Or sometimes, it’s just a matter of attracting different people who use different types of keywords to find the products and services that you offer online.

While I am not advising you to grab as many domain name with the keywords you want as possible, this could be the right time for you think about it.
