The moonwalk is, undoubtedly, the most renowned dance step of today. People have a misconception regarding this cool dance step. They think that the moonwalk was initiated by the King of Pop, late Michael Jackson. But, the truth is, that this dance step dates back to many decades ago. It was just because Michael Jackson was so very popular and he did the moonwalk in a performance for a TV show in 1983, this step also became well-known, and is still considered his signature move. There are many people who try to perfect this step but are unsuccessful. The reason for this is that for taking the steps perfectly, you need to practice regularly. There are some dance enthusiasts, who might just watch a performer doing the moonwalk, and learn the steps in no time.

Illusion of the Moonwalk
The moonwalk is a dance step which is considered to be a break-dancing move. It is a move that involves fine coordination of both the legs, accuracy, and a good balance. As you all might know that the fun thing about this move is the illusion of the performer walking forward smoothly, whereas he is actually moving in the backward direction. The illusion is simply a result of the performer, sliding his legs on the floor in a very smooth manner.

Moonwalk Dance Instructions
It is possible to moonwalk in almost any type of footwear, however, as a beginner, it is recommended that you start with the basics. For setting out, you would compulsorily require a smooth floor. It is better to start moonwalking, wearing only socks. If you wear shoes, then ensure that they have low-friction, flat soles.

Remember that when doing a moonwalk, you need to start the dance step, keeping both the feet together. The first thing you need to do is to slide the right foot a step behind the left one, and position its toe on the ground with the heel lifted off the floor.

You need to maintain a proper proportion of balance and gap between both the legs. If you do not have the right balance, the step would in no way be smooth as expected. Now, the next step is to slide the left foot behind the right one smoothly without lifting it off the floor. When you are doing this step, make sure the heel of the right foot is in the air and the toe is still on the ground.

After the left foot comes behind the right one, it is now time to lift the heel of the left foot off the floor with only the toe touching the floor. Now, slide the right foot behind the left one in the same manner. Keep switching the feet as much as you want, but make sure that you keep the smoothness intact.

While doing the moonwalk, remember that your feet should never lose contact from the floor. Understand the step first and then start slowly, one step at a time. After you get to know the technique, increase the pace and then practice. For checking if you are doing the step correctly, it is better to have a mirror set at the side.

These are the general instructions that can be used for doing the famous moonwalk. At the start, you may think that the moonwalk dance steps are a bit difficult, but once you get to know the fundamentals of doing the steps and practice regularly, it is much easier than you think.
