What is a Mood Ring

To put it simply, a mood ring is a type of ring that contains something known as a thermochromic element. A thermochromic element imparts its ability, of changing colors with a change in the temperature, to a substance. Most mood rings contain thermochromic elements, in the form of a liquid crystal. Therefore, when the ring is worn by someone, it changes colors depending upon the body temperature of the wearer. Since the changes in moods result in a variation in body temperature, it is said that the ring reflects the mood of the wearer.

How does a Mood Ring Work

The working of a mood ring is simple. The stones that mood rings contain are one of the two types. It is either a clear glass stone, mounted on top of a sheet of liquid crystals, or a hollow glass shell that is filled with thermochromic liquid crystals. The thermochromic liquid crystals are sensitive to temperature variations and their changed molecular structure, affects the light wavelengths absorbed and reflected by the crystals. Hence, the change in color is reflected by the mood rings. Depending on the body heat conducted by mood ring, the liquid crystals twist to reflect a portion of the color spectrum.
