Butter or margarine, sugar and egg are the essentials in almost all the icing recipes. It is the method, that will decide the kind of frosting you will eventually make. For example, to make Italian frosting, simple syrup is heated to soft ball stage, which is later whipped into an egg white foam, before butter is added to the frosting. French frosting is made by whipping a solution of heated egg yolks and sugar into a thick foam and butter is added at the end. To make cake, cookies, frosting, etc. confectioner's sugar is used. However, it can also be made using granulated sugar and it does not make any difference to the taste.

Chocolate Mocha Frosting Recipe

This is one of the best recipe to make frosting. It makes for great frosting for chocolate layer cake.

Ingredients
  • Instant Espresso Powder 1 tbsp
  • Vanilla Extract 2 tsp
  • Semisweet Chocolate (chopped) 10 ounces
  • Unsalted Butter (at room temperature) 1 cup
  • Light Corn Syrup 1 tbsp
  • Powdered Sugar (sifted) 2 cups
  • Almonds (sliced and lightly toasted) 1 cup
Method
  • In a bowl, stir espresso powder and vanilla together, until espresso dissolves.
  • While you are dissolving espresso, place chocolate on top of a double boiler over simmering water, until chocolate melts and is smooth.
  • Remove the chocolate from the double boiler and let it cool.
  • In a mixing bowl, whip butter using an electric blender, until fluffy.
  • Now add espresso mixture to the butter and whip well again.
  • Corn syrup should be added to the butter mixture and blend well, as you scrap down sides of bowl occasionally.
  • Beat in melted chocolate, followed by powdered sugar in three batches.
  • In case the frosting becomes very soft, place the it in the refrigerator until firm enough to spread, but do stir the frosting in the refrigerator every 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Spread the frosting over the cake and garnish on all sides with almonds.
Best Mocha Frosting

If you are making cake for a party and use this frosty mocha for icing, you will have your guests asking for more. This recipe can easily be converted into a vegan recipe by using soy milk instead of milk.

Ingredients
  • Powdered Sugar 1 ½ cups
  • Unsweetened Cocoa 1/3 cup
  • Butter or Margarine ¼ cup
  • Vanilla Extract ½ tsp
  • Instant Coffee 1 tsp
  • Milk 2 to 3 tbsp
Method
  • In a mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, cocoa, butter and vanilla and beat until well blended.
  • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of instant coffee in 1 tablespoon of milk, till well combined.
  • Add the coffee mixture to powdered sugar mixture and whisk till well blended.
  • Add milk to the frosting to get the desired consistency, but continue to beat constantly, so that no lumps are formed and the frosting is smooth and fluffy in consistency.
  • With this recipe, you will be able to make about 1 ¼ cups frosting.
Almond Chocolate Mocha Frosting Recipe

This recipe makes one of the best almond chocolate mocha frosting and can be combined well with chocolate marble sheet cake.

Ingredients
  • Powdered Sugar 3 cups
  • Unsweetened Cocoa 2/3 cup
  • Hot Brewed Coffee 3 tbsp
  • Vanilla Extract 1 tsp
  • Almond Extract ½ tsp
  • Butter (softened) ½ cup
  • Half and Half 4 tbsp
Method
  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk sugar and cocoa.
  • Combine coffee and vanilla in a different bowl.
  • Beat butter in a different bowl, until creamy and gradually add sugar and coffee mixture alternately to butter and continue to whisk at low speed, until the frosting is smooth and the desired consistency is reached.
If while making this frosting, you do not have powdered sugar or confectioner's sugar, you can also make use of granulated sugar. If you are going to make the frosting in advance, it is recommended to cover and chill the frosting. While using this frosting, which has been made in advance, let the frosting come to room temperature, but do not heat it, instead you can beat it with an electric mixer.
