Mitochondrial DNA Testing - Preserving your Mother's DNA
A Mitochondrial DNA test can preserve your mother's DNA. Women that have only sons will not have this gene passed to their grandchildren. Though these sons do have their mother's Mitochondrial DNA in them.
Mitochondrial DNA is passed only by females as the Y Chromosome is only passed by males. While the Y chromosome does not get passed to the daughter, Mitochondria is passed to both son and daughter. When the son has children the Mitochondria does not get passed.
This was in my case; my mother had 9 children but we were all boys. All nine of us have our mother's Mitochondria passed to us but this is where it stays. It is somewhat disheartening to know her Mitochondrial DNA will not be passed down to our children.
I discovered Mitochondrial DNA testing can be done on any of us boys. This means we can preserve our mother's DNA because it is the same as ours. Granted, we will not pass it to our children but it is preserved. We have also been able to match our Mitochondrial DNA with others that have taken their DNA test. Since we do not know any maternal lineage with her Mitochondrial DNA in our family that is still alive, we didn't know of it's existence. Though by matching with others we were able to determine our lineage dating back to the 1700s, and living relatives that had carried our mother's Mitochondrial DNA.
