Miss California Fired, But Fighting Back
Carrie Prejean was finally removed as Miss California yesterday, but she has gone on the offensive, pointing out that she was likely fired because of her stance on gay marriage.
Carrie Prejean, in an ironic twist, is likely going to end up being as much a symbol of intolerance as her detractors thought when she first answered her Miss USA pageant question from Perez Hilton. The irony is that Prejean is now a greater victim of intolerance than anything that she advocated in her now-infamous answer.
Prejean was officially removed as Miss California yesterday, following weeks of controversy and rumors that suggested the move was imminent. But Prejean eventually received a vote of confidence from Donald Trump, the CEO of Miss USA, and things seemed to settle a bit. But now that she has been stripped of her crown, Prejean has wasted no time in offering her side of the story.
Early reports are that Prejean was fired for what amounts to a breach of contract. It was stated that she did not fulfill her obligations as Miss California, including scheduled appearances.
While appearing on the Today Show with Matt Lauer this morning, Prejean asked Lauer to cite any instances in which she failed to appear for a scheduled appearance. Lauer read a statement that said she has missed "tens and tens" of appearances, both before and after the Miss USA pageant. Prejean countered logically, asking how many scheduled appearances could there possibly have been in the 30 days between her winning MIss California and the Miss USA pageant itself.
She also repeated her instructions from the Miss California pageant's organizers, which was to focus her efforts on winning Miss USA. The story is far from over, but Prejean appears to be winning the battle for common sense, despite her position on gay marriage.
