Such is the feeling of expecting the arrival of a child, a lovable piece of your existence, to this world! It has been known that about 10 - 20% of established pregnancies end up in miscarriage. And although rare, some mothers may be hit by this unfortunate event, even in their 9th month. The pain that a mother has to go through, knowing that her baby is no more, cannot be felt by anyone else.

Miscarriage Signs and Symptoms
There aren't many symptoms which may help to confirm a miscarriage. Vaginal spotting or bleeding is known to be a common symptom in early pregnancy. However, this symptom must not be taken for granted. This is because many women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy, but still go on to have a successful one. And in some cases, even those with heavy bleeding may not have a miscarriage. Then comes abdominal cramp or pain in the lower back as another symptoms. The passing of fluid or tissue from the vagina, may also be a strong indication of miscarriage when accompanied by the above two symptoms.

An infection in the uterus is also a symptom of miscarriage. This is regarded as a septic miscarriage. In this cases, one may have fever, chills and body aches. Thick vaginal discharge that has a foul odor, may also indicate the same.

Miscarriage Causes and Treatment
Typically, certain problems with the genes or chromosomes of the baby become the reasons for its demise. It must be known that such problems are not inherited from the parents. Except these causes, there are a few instances wherein, the mother's health condition may become the reason. These may include medical conditions such as severe diabetes, disease of the thyroid glands, disorders with hormonal function, certain infections and issues with the cervix or uterus. Note that activities such as exercise, those involving lifting or straining heavy objects, sexual activities or working do not cause miscarriage.

Treatment is required if any fetal tissue is still left inside the womb of the mother lest it might become infected. Activities like exercise and sex must also be avoided. Traveling to places which lack prompt medical assistance, is also advised to be abstained from. With the help of medical procedures it is easy to determine if the miscarriage has really occurred or the embryo was never formed. During this, mothers have a few options to consider. Mothers may choose to let the miscarriage go naturally, or may also get aid of medical treatment to speed up the process. In some cases, surgery becomes a viable option to stop bleeding.

Miscarriage, needless to say, is an extremely disheartening situation for mothers. May be more distressing is to know that there is nothing one can do to prevent this unfortunate loss. However, taking proper care of herself and abstaining from harboring risk factors such as smoking and drinking do help reduce the chances. Also, if she is suffering from some medical conditions, it is essential to work closely with her healthcare provider.
