The first trimester is said to be the crucial period of pregnancy as most miscarriages happen during this time. There are many reasons for miscarriage, though it is very difficult to pinpoint singularly any one of them. It is important that the expectant mother is cautious during this period and if she notices any signs of miscarriage in early pregnancy, she should consult a doctor immediately.

• Do not neglect any back pain. Mild to severe lower back pain can be a miscarriage symptom in early pregnancy. This pain is usually worse than normal menstrual pain.
• Painful contractions every 5-25 minutes very often indicate a miscarriage.
• Red or brown bleeding with or without cramps is a miscarriage sign in early pregnancy. Although 20-30% of total pregnancies do face this problem, almost 50% of them result in normal full-term pregnancies.
• White or pink mucus discharge is a sign of miscarriage in early pregnancy.
• Uterine bleeding is also a symptom of miscarriage.
• Cramps in early pregnancy in the lower abdomen can lead to a miscarriage. These cramps are more severe than menstrual cramps.
• Tissue combined with clot discharge is an indication of complication in pregnancy.
• Fading pregnancy symptoms like disappearance of morning sickness, breast tenderness and soreness, feeling sick and having to urinate frequently can be a miscarriage sign in early pregnancy.
• Fever and vomiting during the early pregnancy period is a warning sign of miscarriage.
• Weight loss in the early stages of pregnancy should not be neglected. It can be a symptom of miscarriage.
• Frequent bowel movement is not a very healthy sign during the nascent pregnancy stage.
• If the blood test indicates falling hCG levels, it is said to be the most reliable indicator of miscarriage. In case the falling hCG levels are noticed, the gynecologist and obstetrician will ask the expectant mother to undergo 2 or 3 blood tests at regular intervals to confirm miscarriage.

Complications of Miscarriage
Miscarriage in early pregnancy is a tragic thing, but the body recovers quickly from it. Although at times complications do arise. They are listed below.

Incomplete Miscarriage: There is a possibility that tissue from the pregnancy is retained in the uterus. Often, this complication of miscarriage is resolved on its own, but there are chances of a woman needing help from the gynecologist and obstetrician. In such cases, uterine scrapping is carried out to remove the scar tissue.

Hemorrhage: Miscarriage is accompanied by menstrual bleeding. But if the women is using up a menstrual pad in an hour, it is a sign of miscarriage complication.

Asherman’s Syndrome: This is a complication of miscarriage. It involves scar tissue in the uterus, which leads to fertility issues and subsequent miscarriages.

Infection: If any symptoms of infection are noticed, it is recommended to visit the physician immediately. An infection is one of the dangerous complications of miscarriage, but can be cured with the help of antibiotics.

Depression: Clinical depression can result due to spontaneous abortion. If any symptoms of depression are noticed, seek medical help at the earliest.

Septicemia: It means poisoning of blood, normally caused due to bacteria. This is noticed in a some women as a complication of miscarriage.
