Their amazing personality and unique physical appearance make Chihuahuas a great go-everywhere companion. Chihuahuas come in different coat colors and coat types. There are two types of Chihuahuas based on the type of coat - smooth and long coat. Both these types have the same breed characteristics and very often they are present in the same litter. Many people prefer to have the smooth type rather than the long coat type.
Miniature teacup Chihuahuas refer to the same breed of Chihuahuas, except that they weigh less than the standard weight. Unlike the normal weight of a Chihuahua, which is about 6 pounds, a miniature teacup Chihuahua weighs less than 3 pounds. In fact, they are unusually small puppies, which are born within a litter of Chihuahuas. They are also referred to as "teacups", "pockets" or "tinies".
The Chihuahua Club of America (CCA) is concerned about the different names assigned to the same Chihuahua and expressed that the usage of these terms is incorrect and misleading. Teacups have been referred to as exotic and more valuable by the dog breeders for fetching more money from the buyers. Hence, one should be aware of this fact and take care while buying a puppy.
Miniature teacup Chihuahuas have large and well-rounded (apple dome) skulls, which is one of the most characteristic features of this breed. There is a soft spot or muzzle on the top of the skull of a puppy. The snout or muzzle is moderately short and pointed. They have large, radiant, shiny and non-protruding eyes. Another important feature of Chihuahuas is the presence of large and erect ears at a slightly lower portion on the head. They have a well-balanced body. The body length is slightly more than the height of Chihuahuas. They have a moderately long and sickle-shaped tail.
Chihuahuas can be trained easily provided that one should have patience and a great sense of humor while training them. They are very intelligent, energetic and are quick learners, who respond well to proper training. Chihuahuas are loyal and faithful watchdogs. However, they should be trained how to meet people since they have a feisty and mischievous character.
Many of the dog buyers get attracted to teacups because of their extraordinary small size. However, some people are of the opinion that they have certain health problems and have very short life span as compared to the normal Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas are not recommended for families with children under 8 years as children might cause injury to them. While keeping Chihuahuas, it is advisable to take the necessary precautions and extra care required for their health and well-being.
