Microcurrent Therapy Side Effects

There are several facets associated to microcurrent therapy, one of which is its side effects. Although, this relatively new method of treating physical injuries has gained significant media attention, not many people are convinced regarding its effectiveness. In this article, we will know more about the same.
Our body processes are carried out with the help of various small electric pulses at cellular level. These electric pulses are referred to as 'bio electric pulses'. Often, due to physical injuries like sports injuries/accidents, the natural flow and balance of these bio electric pulses is disturbed. Microcurrent therapy is a form of physical therapy that uses the principle of supplying bio electricity to our body so that the need of bio electric pulses is met. By generating artificial electricity at a very low voltage, this medical care has the ability to treat several health disorders.

Microcurrent Therapy and Uses
Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (MENS) or more commonly referred microcurrent therapy has gained popularity in the recent years. By tuning currents generated in this treatment option to the level equal to that of our body (bio electric pulses), this therapy has been employed in treating several problems like muscle pain, neuropathy, shingles etc. The process used in this medical aid is a popular application in the facelift surgery. It is the physician who applies electric pulses through the machine using vinyl graphite gloves or electrodes. This process lasts for about 60 to 90 minutes. The intensity and duration of applied current varies depending on the severity of pain the person experiencing due to trauma. While some patients have recovered within weeks several others take years to get rid of the trauma related pain completely. Owing to its unpredictable results, there is no surety regarding the effectiveness of this therapy.

Side Effects
Although the side effects of this therapy are rare, people with certain type of complications must not go for this therapy. It is not used in patients with problems relating to brain, patients with pacemakers and during pregnancy related cases. People with complications in spinal cord must inform their physical therapist before starting the treatment. This is necessary so that there is no extra pressure on spinal cord else several other problems may further arise. Microcurrent side effects magnify, in intensity, in case they are done for some medical conditions for which some other treatment option is required. Hence, a proper knowledge about patient's medical history is important for the therapist to decide if the patient must be given this therapy. In resonance, a type of risk associated with this therapy, there is a drastic change in muscle tissues leads to sudden removal of waste products (that have for long been stored in the body). These fast processes lead to sudden detoxification reaction after treatment. In other detoxification process, like massaging, the intensity is quite less, however, in microcurrent therapy this detoxification process occurs rapidly. Besides this, there is a sudden boost to the cellular metabolism.

Some of the micorcurrent side effects include nausea, fatigue, drowsiness and a temporary flu like feeling. The duration of microcurrent side effects is generally from 4 to 24 hours, and it starts approximately, 90 minutes after the treatment process has been carried out. It is not that everyone experiences side effects. As stated earlier, there is a lot of ambiguity about results of this treatment. Some people experience very positive results while various others experience some side effects. To avoid the side effects of this therapy, an individual must discuss all health related concerns with an expert doctor and only then, he or she should move on to this treatment procedure.

This treatment procedure must be accompanied by proper diet, healthy lifestyle and exercises. Just relying on this therapy is not a very bright idea. The risks related to this disease are initially normal however, if they persist for long time, immediate medical supervision is essential.
