Mess Free Chihuahua Potty Training

In order to achieve success in Chihuahua potty training, you need to pick a location that your dog can always go to for their potty time. With enough effort this will soon be the only location that your puppy will go to for potty time.
Chihuahua potty training is something that every owner seems to fear if they have not gone through this process before. While it seems that there isn’t a lot that a little Chihuahua can mess up with the little amount that they can hold, many people fear the fact that they cannot hold their bladders for very long because of their size and that Chihuahua training will be very difficult. But while some of that may be true, there is no reason why this training period has to be a stressful time.

It is best to start the training by understanding where exactly it is that you will want to allow your little friend to relieve himself. If you are thinking about always having your Chihuahua go outside, you may want to consider the weather conditions where you live. While it will not hurt a Chihuahua to go outside in the snow for a brief moment, they cannot be left out there for too long.

The best way to go about Chihuahua potty training is by using the crate training method. The importance of picking the correct sized crate is critical to your dog’s training success or failure. Dogs naturally are animals that will not go potty where they sleep unless they absolutely have to. So, while it is important to not purchase a crate too small, it is also important not to go too big either. If the dog can walk freely around the crate with room to potty in one spot and still room to stretch out and potty in another, then the cage is too big.

Also, for safety concerns, you will want to make sure the size of the holes between the crate’s bars are not so big where the dog may get their head stuck, which can cause serious medical and emotional damage. Check the corners of the crate and anywhere that your Chihuahua can and will come into contact with and make sure that there are no sharp edges that can cause injury. If using a crate with a plastic or metal floor, be sure to add a blanket so the cold floor does not make him sick.

For when you are not home and for during the nights, this crate will serve as your dog’s home away from home during your Chihuahua potty training experience. Make sure that you place them in their crate with a positive attitude and never use their crate as a place to go for punishment as they will soon resent being in there. As soon as you are able to let them out, take them by leash or carry them to the place where they are allowed to go potty.

Limit their meal times to be the only time where food and water is available. Dogs who have access to food and water all day long have more accidents and take a lot longer to train. After a meal, take your dog to their potty location to relieve themselves, as this is all the time it takes for the food and water to make its way through. After enough time of being consistent, you will soon see that your Chihuahua training is turning into success and before you know it your dog will be fully trained.
