Meredith Murder Mystery

The final verdict in the case of the death of Meredith Kercher raised many eyebrows as well as controversial statements. The facts are, however, a little tricky.
Meredith Kercher was murdered on the 1st of November 2007, in the Italian city of Perugia. She apparently died of deep wounds, suggestively implicated by a kitchen knife on her throat and died a slow and painful death. She was found partly dressed, soaked in blood below her bed in the dormitory which she shared with three other female students.

Police arrested her roommate Amanda Knox, her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was an Italian student and Patrick Diya Lumumba, a local bar owner. Lumumba was released later with a compensation for unjust imprisonment. Later, Rudy Guede was also arrested for involvement in the murder and tried separately. The arrests were made on account of the traces of Knox's DNA that were found on the handle of the knife, and a portion of Mr Sollecito's DNA deposited on the clasp of Miss Kercher's bra.

It would be interesting to know that even after several months, the swift investigators were unable to find the real motive behind the brutal killing of the innocent 21 year old British student. It was assumed that Knox was highly jealous and detested her roommate. She even wanted to punish her for the critical comments she made for Knox's unhygienic ways. Prosecutors also believed that it was the result of an ugly sex game where they forced Kercher to submit to sex. The motive could not be known and prosecutors got confused repeatedly during the course of the trial.

The final verdict came after 11 months of trial where Amanda was awarded a sentence of 26 years while her former boyfriend Sollecito a 25 years in prison. The 22 year old Knox broke down to tears as the final verdict was read in the court. While Knox's family left the court in distress and tears, the Kercher's looked calm. Their lawyer later said that the family was quite satisfied and thought that their daughter has finally received the justice she deserved since long. Guede was sentenced to 30 years in prison through a separate fast-track trial in 2008.

On her second death anniversary, the family broke down in public. While her brothers and sister held dear her "infectious, upbeat personality, smile and sense of humour", her father recalled his daughter's love for Halloween. The most heart-breaking was, however, her mother's distressed remark, "You send your daughter away to study and she doesn't come back. We will never, ever get over it." Their dear 'Mez' would live in their hearts as well as others, forever.
