List of Mental Illnesses and Disorders
Acute Stress Disorder: This is a very common type of disorder. It includes the state of the person's mind after he has experienced a traumatic or an unfortunate event which was unexpected. Generally, it is referred to as a temporary mental disorder.
Agoraphobia: If a person has agoraphobia, he will usually be scared to go in public places or even open spaces such as playgrounds, shopping malls, airports, railway stations, etc. This disorder falls under the broad category of social disorders.
Anorexia Nervosa: This is a mental disorder faced pretty much by women in their younger years. In anorexia nervosa, the person does not feel like eating, just because of the fear of increasing body weight.
Bipolar Disorder: Many people around the world suffer from bipolar disorder. This relates to mood swings ranging from extreme highs like over-excitement to lows such as depressions.
Major Depressive Disorder: This is also a primary mental disorder that is found in people. A person with a major depressive disorder tends to feel low in self-esteem and confidence, and as a result loses interest in life.
Delusional Disorder: In a delusional disorder, the individual creates a fixed concept in mind which has nothing to do with reality. An example can be the feeling of always being under police surveillance.
Learning Disability: As the name suggests, a person with a learning disability is not able to learn quickly, due to the brain's grasping power. Motivation is probably the best method of treating this mental issue.
Dissociative Disorders: It relates to the disorders regarding ups and downs in memory, identity, self-awareness, and many other aspects.
Factitious Disorders: If an individual is suffering from factitious disorder, he tends to exaggerate on the symptoms of his mental or physical condition. This is simply to attract sympathy and attention of caretakers.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD): In this mental disorder, the person is extremely self-centered regarding his prestige in the society, his gains, and all about himself. The condition of narcissistic personality disorder is generally associated with rudeness and self-centeredness.
Fregoli Delusion: This is a somewhat rare disorder, wherein the individual has a feeling that several people are just a single person in reality. He may even believe that a person is not present at all.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): In OCPD, the person has the tendency to focus unnecessarily on abidance of rules and regulations and perfection. This condition is mainly found in corporate managers and in those with authority.
Psychosis: This is an abnormal mental condition wherein a person loses contact with concepts in the real world. A psychotic holds unusual beliefs and may experience hallucinations.
Separation Anxiety Disorder: The separation anxiety disorder is one of the anxiety disorders in which the person is scared of being separated from his loved ones or anything that he is attached to.
Note that the above mentioned are just a few major categories of mental illnesses and disorders. There are many subtypes which are included in these categories. For example, in mood and anxiety disorder, you will find different phobias and panic related mental problems. In personality disorders, you will generally find types such as histrionic personality and dependent personality. The field of types of mental illnesses is pretty broad and cannot be explained in one go.
