Men are Still Embarrassed to Talk to Their Doctors About ED

Almost every man will experience it at some point. It will be time for the moment of truth in the bedroom, and, uh-oh, the unit will decide to shut down. Nothing is more embarrassing, disheartening or degrading for a guy than when his gear won’t deploy. It’s called erectile dysfunction, or ED.

The main one, of course, is male pride. Not many men want to be honest enough to admit that their masculinity may be threatened by the inability to achieve an erection and satisfy their partner. Another reason can be cultural. In American culture, of course, it’s an embarrassment for a guy to admit he can’t get an erection when he’s surrounded by our testosterone-fueled society of bodybuilding governors and seemingly invincible macho movie stars. Who wants to admit he can’t get it up after his date has just spent two hours watching Richard Gere make out with a heroine or Sly Stallone ripping the heads off bad guys and saving the world? How do regular guys compete with that?

The answer, of course, is that we can’t, but somehow we need to keep our self-confidence. And when a man loses that confidence because he can’t keep it up, he can lose himself completely. Thankfully, there is now help, even if it is through chemical means. Today’s men have to accept the fact that they’re living longer, and that they won’t always be able to have sex the way they did when they were in their 20’s. So if a pill is what it’s going to take to save a man’s love life, his own self-esteem may well end up being dependent upon his willingness to swallow his pride and accept the alternative in pill form.
