Memory of Rain
A soldier remembers rain.
Standing in a desert
Staring to the horizon
Wishing for home
I watch the Djinns dance
In a voice of burned flint
And other aliens smells
They roar, "Bend knee
And have done"
But I will not
For I have laughed
In sheets of rain
I have run
Barefoot in grass
And puddles
They take my breath
The heat cracking my lips
But I laugh on
My nose cracks and bleeds
But I laugh on
My skin blisters and peels
And I laugh on
And when life leaves me
And my skull is bleached
I will smile
Remembering Kentucky rain
Staring to the horizon
Wishing for home
I watch the Djinns dance
In a voice of burned flint
And other aliens smells
They roar, "Bend knee
And have done"
But I will not
For I have laughed
In sheets of rain
I have run
Barefoot in grass
And puddles
They take my breath
The heat cracking my lips
But I laugh on
My nose cracks and bleeds
But I laugh on
My skin blisters and peels
And I laugh on
And when life leaves me
And my skull is bleached
I will smile
Remembering Kentucky rain
