Memories of Sirus Wolf
Unconscious, Sirus is reminded of his past
"Not now son, I'm working" Michael said, dismissing his son's questions before it was asked.
"B-But father..." Sirus whimpered standing in his parents study. His mother walked in with papers in her hand and she rolled her green eyes at him.
"Honey why don't you go to your play room? You still haven't touched the new console we got for you." She said standing over her husband and handing him the papers she began analyzing the data.
"I thought...we could go out today." Sirus said shyly looking down at the floor boards.
"We can't." Susan snapped.
"You know we have a lot of work to do." she added turning her attention to the laptop on the desk.
"But today's my birthday...I don't want to be home all day." Sirus said looking up at his parents.
Susan looked at her husband and he simply shrugged. She glared at him and reluctantly Michael stood up and walked over to his son.
Kneeling down and placing his arms on Sirus's shoulder he began...
"Sirus you know that your parents are doing important research and sometimes we bring the work home, for that we are sorry. Remember your our only son.." Sirus cut in.
"And we love you, we promise we will make it up next time." Sirus finished for his father hearing the excuse one to many times. He stormed out of the office without another word.
"Why didn't you remind me? I didn't even get him anything." Michael grumbled at Susan.
She looked up calmly and gave him a scrutinizing look.
"It's not my job to remind you of that, besides I forgot myself." She said closing the laptop.
"Susan you gave birth to him, how could you possibly forget?" Michael asked.
"Well it was what?.....13 years ago today and he is your son too! Besides I've been completely swamped with the particle data." She replied angrily standing up and heading out. Before she could reach the door, Michael grabbed her by the hand and pulled her close.
"All you do is look over data, I'm the one that actually gets the work done here." he whispered playfully closing the gap between them and kissed his wife. Susan unable to stay mad returned the passionate kiss.
"Sure you do hun, that's why we've learned so much in the past 15 months." She said sarcastically.
Michael laughed it off and pressed up against her.
"Hey thanks to all my hard work we can power the entire globe for our son's lifetime." Susan shrugged Michael off bothered by the remark. He sighed in return.
"We can still make it up to him baby, you don't have to act like that." Michael said soothingly.
"I told you Michael it was a mistake...we should have...." Michael grabbed her roughly.
"Hey, hey, don't you dare!...you should have taken those damn pills. If anyone to blame it's your fault." Michael hissed letting her go and walking over to the jacket hanger he grabbed his sweater.
"Where do you think your going!?" Susan snapped.
"I'm taking my son wherever he wants to go, it's not his fault his mothers heartless." Michael replied.
"Look who's talking.." Susan said walking over and reaching for her jacket.
"What are you doing?" Michael asked heading to the office door.
"I'm going to spend time with my son!" she huffed and followed her husband to their son's room.
Sirus sat in his fathers car twirling a pair of black goggles that he found in the back seat. They were on their way to the theaters and Sirus couldn't be happier. Prior to the road trip his parents bickered over where to take him. Sirus suggested the movies and they went along with the idea, it was his birthday after all. Sirus didn't like his parents arguing but a part of him did. If it wasn't for that he honestly thought his parents would never spend time with him.
Susan sitting on the passenger side tucked her hair behind her ear and looked back at her son.
"Oh honey please don't play with those, they are very expensive." She said reaching for the goggles.
"Really? They look pretty cheap to me." Sirus replied handing them over.
"That's the reaction we are hoping for, they are actually used to see things the human eye can't." Susan said smiling.
"Like x-ray glasses?" Sirus inquired.
"Yea son like x-ray glasses, just a lot cooler." Michael jumped in. Susan glared at him.
"0o0o0o! Can I try them!?" Sirus pleaded.
"No honey I don't think that would be wise." Susan said firmly. Michael frowned at his wife.
"Sure you can son...but just for a minute." Michael cut in.
"Michael that goes against company policy." Susan scolded.
"Please Susan you can't be serious. He's a kid and our son, unless you've forgotten that." he replied. Susan grimaced.
"Be careful honey those are very precious." Susan said reluctantly handing him the goggles.
"Yes!" Sirus squealed quickly putting on the goggles. Once they were on he frowned.
"Its dark, I can't see anything." Sirus complained.
Susan reached over and pushed a small button near the straps. Sirus gasped.
An explosion of colors came into view. The black leather seats looked blue, Sirus looked at his mother and she looked red in the face but her eyes and mouth glowed an eerie yellow. Looking out the window Sirus saw that the sky was not blue but an odd hues of different colors. Greens, purples, dark pinks and reds. Every where he looked a different color appeared and the only one constant was a light blue that seemed to replace the clouds natural white. The trees that they passed by started out light red near the bottom and turned blue towards the top. Sirus looked down at his hands and they were also red. He began feeling dizzy so he slipped them off and let them rest on his neck. Sirus was going to ask about them but was interrupted by his father's cell phone ringing.
Michael's phone barely rang twice before his wife's phone went off. Sirus let his head fall and sighed dejectedly knowing exactly who was calling. They answered their phones and 60 seconds later they each hung up. Michael looked at his wife and she returned his astonished look.
"Honey we are so sorry but we have an emergency meeting we have to attend." Susan said while Michael began swinging the car around.
"That's not fair, you guys promised!" Sirus pouted.
"After the meeting we'll go I promise Sirus, this is really important." Michael said.
"Seriously you promise?" Sirus asked after a few minutes, looking back and forth between his parents.
"Yes we will even take you to the arcades after the movie." Michael added softly.
"...Okay, but I'm not happy." Sirus muttered.
The car came to a stop at the front gate, a huge facility loomed off in the distance. Michael rolled down his window and presented his ID to the security scanner. To his surprise it failed to register the barcode, a security officer stepped out of his booth to intervene.
"I'm sorry sir the computers are down and no one is being permitted into the premises." the officer mechanically responded.
"The whole system is down?" Susan asked aloud.
"Again I'm sorry ma'am, I am not allowed to disclose any further information. Please see your selves out." The security officer said dismissing the couple and heading back to his post.
"Excuse me officer, I am Michael Wolf and this is my wife Susan. We have been summoned for an emergency meeting. Please call your superior and inform him of our arrival." Michael said firmly. The officer stopped dead in his tracks, he quickly turned around and returned to the vehicle.
"Pl-Pl-Please forgive me s-sir, I had no idea." The officer said apologetically.
"Don't worry about it just open the gates." Michael said.
The officer quickly nodded and hurried to perform the task. As the car passed through the gates he noticed a young man sitting in the back of the car but decided to leave it be or else he might risk losing his job.
After parking the vehicle the family made their way to the elevators. Not needing to stop at every checkpoint they pressed on unhindered. The security system seemed to be down all over the building. Luckily electricity was still running throughout the complex and continued to leave some systems operational. Getting off the top floor they stepped of the elevator and made their way to a waiting area. After a few minutes the receptionist came in to greet them.
"Hello Mr. an Mrs. Wolf, we are sorry for the inconvenience. I'm sure you have been informed of the situation?" she asked quickly.
"Somewhat, we heard the AI was malfunctioning but had no idea it was so severe." Susan answered.
"The problem has been worsening every twenty minutes or so, we have just lost access to the strong hold." the receptionist informed them. Michael and Susan looked deeply troubled by the news.
"Please follow me to the situation room." the receptionist said.
"Sirus we need you to wait here." Michael said looking down at his son. Sirus nodded watching his mother follow the receptionist into the hallway.
"Dad I'm hungry." Sirus whispered. Michael was taken aback by his sons words. He could not remember the last time his son called him Dad. Michael smiled reaching into his back pocket.
"I am real sorry little man, I know today is your day and we shouldn't even be here." Michael said handing his wallet over to Sirus. He grabbed the wallet and hugged his father. Michael was shocked once again by Sirus's affection.
"We will try to hurry." Michael said returning the hug. Sirus let go and reaching into the wallet began taking a few dollar bills out. Michael stopped him and ruffled his blonde curls.
"You look just like your mother, did you know that?" Michael said smiling. Sirus blushed in return and looked up at his father. Contrary to Sirus's green eyes and dirty blonde hair, Michael had dark brown eyes and even darker hair.
"Why don't you hold that for me buddy I won't need it where I'm going." Michael said referring to the wallet.
"Go to the break room it should still be functioning, you do remember where that is right?" Michael asked.
"Yea dad I've only been here like a thousand times." Sirus replied.
"I'm sorry sir..." the receptionist said emerging from the hallway she had previously exited from.
"..but the meeting is about to begin. If you will please follow me." Not waiting for a response she made her way back towards the hallway.
"Go ahead I'll be fine." Sirus said looking at his father. Michael smiled and began heading towards the hallway. Looking back at Sirus his face softened.
"I love you son." Michael said proudly and with that continued on to the meeting.
"Yea, yea, I love you too Dad." Sirus muttered although his father was long gone, turning around, he began walking deeper into the complex his parents loved more than him.
2 hours later Sirus still sat in the break room, eating the last of the chocolate bars he got from the vending machines. Out of complete boredom he began playing with the goggles around his neck, experimentally looking at things around the room. There was nothing interesting about the room, with or without the goggles. Sirus began entertaining the idea of venturing around the place, after all it was a Saturday and the place was empty. On top of that the AI system was down, Sirus had no one to stop him from exploring every nook and cranny of the place. He remembered a few years ago he went off on his own. He couldn't so much as enter a staircase without being asked for his fingerprints and retina scan. It must be fate, he thought making his way out of the lounge.
Michael was the last one to take his seat, he calmly looked around the room and noticed one empty chair. The only board member not present was Castor the President and founder of the company. There were 6 people presently around the table including Michael and Susan. Roselyn, Benjamin, Victor and the Vice-President Jacob who was the son of Castor.
"As you can see my father was unable to attend this meeting..." Jacob began looking around at each member in turn.
"You have all been summoned here because there has been a breach in the AI's infrastructure. Further more before the AI went offline it informed us the culprit's signal was coming from the strong hold." Jacob got up and began to pace the room. All the members were to shocked to speak.
"Most disturbing of all was the encrypted message the AI managed to send us before it is forced shutdown." Everyone gaped at Jacob.
"Impossible! How could the smartest being on earth be outsmarted and forced to shut down?" Victor demanded.
"We don't know but the signal emanating from the strong hold has been confirmed as the cause. It has dealt a hard blow to our security systems." Jacob replied.
"What was the message and who sent it?" Roselyn asked.
"That's the most bizarre part of it all." Jacob paused.
"It came from the containment chamber." everyone was speechless. Jacob opened a black folder sitting on the table and began handing out print outs of the message. Everyone received a copy and after reading the short message were baffled.
"Surely this must be a joke." Benjamin said tossing the sheet on the table.
"I agree it has to be a prank, we may not know much about the origin of the particle but surely we would know if it was a alive and intelligent to boot." Roselyn quickly added.
"I don't know about that..." Michael began grabbing everyone's attention.
"When Doctor Florence mistakenly opened up the portal, we had no idea where it opened to and we are no closer to that answer today." Michael finished.
"Indeed it may be alive but to assume it has intelligence is preposterous. I agree with Roselyn this must be some sort of hoax." Susan joined in.
"Let's look at the facts, if it is intelligent life why hasn't it made contact before? Why now? And if it so intelligent that it can somehow override our AI's fire walls then surely it can free itself. It doesn't make sense, I agree we may not know much about it but we would know if it was ALIVE." Victor added.
"You all have a point but how do we explain the AI's reported breach and the encrypted message?" Jacob asked the group.
"Well maybe it was a malfunction on the AI part, or an outside AI system could be the culprit. The only one that would have that data is the AI itself. We have to bring it back online..." Michael continued. The board began deliberating the issue of bringing the AI online. Michael looked down at the note and read it again and again.
"Release Me" it read
Sirus was completely lost. He worked his way through every floor and found nothing interesting. Finally reaching the basement he slipped on his goggles again but finding nothing he continued on. There was a single room in the basement and it was mechanically shut. Sirus walked up to the door frowning, it was awash in different shades of reds and blues. Reaching out he touched the door and to his surprise it slid opened. Sirus was blinded by a bright light illuminating from the center of the room. After a few moments the light dimmed and Sirus made his way towards the structure. It was a metallic cylinder and there was a cloud like substance inside. It was multicolored, pulsing and shimmering different shades of reds, blues and greens.
As soon as Sirus made one color out another appeared. Sirus curiously pressed his palms against the thick glass. Something hammered against Sirus's skull and he entered a world of pain. Strange images pored through Sirus's mind, foreign faces and lands he had never known. One single word echoed in his mind. HOME. It said. Sirus was unable to lower his hand from the glass. RELEASE ME! It demanded. Sirus felt compelled to do as it wished. What are you? Sirus thought to himself. TRAPPED it responded, Sirus was stunned. RELEASE ME!! It demanded again. How can I? Sirus thought. An image of a lever ran threw his mind and Sirus looked around to see where the lever was located. Finding it, he was able to pull his hand away and went to pull the lever.
The board was finally able to get the AI online. It quickly warned them of an unauthorized personal in the containment chamber also known as the strong hold. Jacob demanded a live feed from the strong hold and the AI complied. To everyone's surprise the unauthorized person was Sirus Wolf and he was releasing the particle. Before any one could react the room began to shake.
FREEDOM! the voice howled. Sirus stood still unsure of what to do next. The cloud like substance hovered towards him and spoke.
Help me find my way home.. it said insistently, seductively. Sirus nodded slowly, heart set on helping the entity make it home. The cloud swarmed Sirus covering him from head to toe. Sirus jumped back in fear unsure of what was happening.
Do not be afraid child, I will not harm you. I cannot maintain a physical form and need your assistance. I will not hurt you... it whispered. Sirus relaxed and the cloud began making its way into Sirus's body. Into his mouth, nose and ears, every ounce of the cloud was consumed by Sirus and he slowly rose into the air.
Thank you, Sirus Wolf the voice said.
What is your name and where are you from? Sirus asked.
You may call me.......Fang and I am from a world born of this one. Fang answered.
"I don't understand." Sirus thought aloud.
I will show you. Fang replied. As Sirus's mind merged with Fang's memories he was unable to stay conscious. Fang now unhindered by the dominant host of his new body began seeking the cause of his abduction and his way home.
"B-But father..." Sirus whimpered standing in his parents study. His mother walked in with papers in her hand and she rolled her green eyes at him.
