Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory drug that belongs to the NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) group. Meloxicam is prescribed for treating pain and inflammation in dogs, cats and humans. This drug is similar to Ibuprofen and Advil and is said to be safe to use for dogs than most drugs. Yet, meloxicam for dogs has certain side effects. Working of Meloxican for Dogs

Meloxican is available in the common names Metacam and Mobic. It is prescribed to provide relief to canine osteoarthritis and works by inhibiting the synthesis of chemicals called prostaglandis. These chemicals are similar to hormones that help in the functioning of muscles and blood vessels. This drug also helps in controlling blood pressure and inflammation in our canine friends. It is also used in case of canine injuries, cancer, surgery and dental infections.

Meloxicam For Dogs ~ Dosage

Meloxicam should only be prescribed to dogs, by a veterinarian or administered directly by a veterinarian to the dog. This drugs can cause some serious side-effects in dogs. Therefore, a careful dosage should be given to the dog. The meloxicam dosage is prescribed at an initial dose of 0.1 mg per pound (0.2 mg/kg). It is then increased to about 0.05 mg per pound (0.1 mg/kg) once a day. You should avoid long-term use of Meloxicam on dogs, as it can cause serious side effects. You should complete the entire course prescribed to prevent a relapse.

Meloxicam for Dogs ~ Side Effects

Meloxicam can cause many side effects that include stomach ulceration, unusual bleeding and kidney failure. It can even lead to hepatopathy reaction, that is, liver disease. It may also lead to yellowing of gums, skin and whites of the eyes due to jaundice. The dog may show symptoms like nausea, diarrhea and appetite loss. There may be an increased amount of liver enzymes in the blood. Many times, it may cause a dog allergy reaction like facial swelling, hives and rash. It may also cause peritonitis, intestinal ulcers and dark tarry stools. Sometimes, it may affect the blood platelets and hence the blood clotting. Some dogs may also show change in urinating frequency, color and odor of urine.

You should avoid giving Meloxicam, if the animal is suffering from liver or heart problems, gastrointestinal ulcers, etc. You should avoid giving Meloxicam to pregnant or nursing animals and puppies that are under 6 months of age.
