Mel Gibson is Going to be on the Hook for Big Child Support Bills

Mel Gibson and his girlfriend have broken up, leaving Gibson with what is likely to be a sizable monthly child support bill.
Mel Gibson and his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, have broken up, but left in the wake of that relationship is both a 5-month-old daughter, named Lucia, and likely a very large child support bill for Gibson. A family law specialist asked about the breakup confirmed that a large monthly bill would be likely, though Gibson likely has no legal obligation to make alimony payments because he and Grigorieva were not married.

Said attorney Steven Knowles, "This is not a dissolution of marriage action. The mother would have rights to child support, which in the case of Mr. Gibson, will be very substantial." Knowles has estimated that child support bills would range from $12,000 to $15,000 per month. Continued Knowles, "He is what we call a high-income earner, and there is a high-income earner stipulation that says they must pay any amount reasonably necessary for the support of the child."

So, to summarize, Gibson and Grigorieva, whom he left for his wife of many years, were never married. Mel Gibson makes boatloads of money (duh), and he’s going to be paying over $144,000 per year to support Lucia. Simple enough and, let’s face it, $50,000 per month is still probably small change to Gibson. Knowles, seeking to shore up the understanding of what is going to happen, noted, "Merely living together and having a child does not give the mother any rights to property and certainly no spousal support." Knowles is not involved in the legal issues between Gibson and his ex-girlfriend.
